Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Following the exploits of a proud knight and a spirited young heiress, this fast-paced Highland adventure, the second in Howell's newest trilogy (after Highland Knight), is a bracing blend of high suspense and sizzling romance. When Contessa Delgado releases Sir Revan Halyard from her guardian uncle's dungeon, he demonstrates his gratitude by taking her hostage. Ironically, she finds she's safer in Revan's company than in Uncle Thurkettle's keep; her uncle, after all, planned to kill her so that he and his avaricious daughter could control the lands and fortune Tess inherited after her parents died. While hiding out in a remote cave, Tess learns that Revan is a spy for the crown and that he suspects her uncle of consorting with a clan plotting to overthrow King James II. A strong romantic bond builds between Tess and Revan as they attempt to dispatch the traitors but, in the end, her inheritance proves to be their biggest stumbling block. Revan, a younger son short on land but long on pride, refuses to marry Tess until he has property of his own, and it's up to Tess and her amiable clansmen to convince him that marrying into money for love is not a crime. Howell's deft use of period dialogue lends the book a tangible sense of time and place, and her protagonists' spirited interactions will swiftly endear them to readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tess and Revan, the pros and cons, March 1, 2002
This is the first book I've read of Hannah Howell. I was a bit iffy at first, but I'm glad I took a chance and read it. I'm an avid reader of Garwood, Quinn, Quick, McNaught, Dodd, and some of Brenda Joyce. Now, I've found another good author. The strong chemistry between Tess and Revan will definately keep you reading. The only thing that put me off was the fast paced relationship. I didn't really like the way they "got it on" not even half way up the story. But don't get me wrong, the love scenes were pretty good and the author kept it with meaning. (Personally, I hate books where they just make love period. I prefer books where there's a special reason behind their love making.)

Tess has a lot of Character and you wouldn't be disappointed with her. Though she makes the first move to their fast paced relationship, that's the only flaw I found in her character. Revan, is strong, honorable, and full of pride (the typical historical romance man). The only flaw in his character would be the inner-conflict the author set. Revan doesn't want to marry money and land because he is a mere knight, hence he didn't want to marry Tess (even though the made love almost every chapter). I would have prefered a deeper inner conflict. His family's wonderful, he's a knight, though he's not the heir he doesn't regret it...i find his position quite pleasant, yet he keeps this stupid "i don't wanna be seen as a money hungry wolf" act.

To sum it all up, I found the book quite enjoyable. If you enjoy any of the authors I've listed above, you'd probably like this book. It's not the BEST but it's pretty darn good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, Hard to Put Down Read!, July 8, 2004
By A Customer
Hannah Howell has become one of my favorite authors, and this book is one of my favorites. I have read it three times, and it as great as all of her books, and a definte keeper. Revan is a wonderful hero, with a stubborn streak a mile wide. But isn't that true of a lot of men? And Tessa is a loving, strong heroine with just the right amount of believability. She knows what she is getting into when she and Revan become lovers, hoping that her love will triumph over his unwillingness to marry. Isn't that just like all of us women everywhere, hoping to change our man in some way with our love? They must run from Tessa's Uncle Fergus amd the Black Douglas Clan who are plotting treason against King James II. When they finally reach Tessa's maternal relations, the Delgados and Comyns, her Uncle Silvio knows right away that Revan and Tessa are more than just friends! He even puts them in one bedroom, to Tessa's everlasting embarassment! Revan agrees to marry Tessa, but at this point he doesn't know how much money and land Tessa has, and that is why he doesn't want to marry. He has never wanted anyone to think that he married for money! And Tessa has "neglected" to tell him just how large her inheritance is! Then, she gets kidnapped by her Uncle Fergus and those rascally Douglases. Well, you have to read the book to see just how this turns out. Is there a war? Does Revan come to his senses and overcomes his pride? Does Tessa tell the truth about her inheritance before the wedding? IS there a wedding? It is really a good book. I also want to say that I am writing this review because of author Sue-Ellen Welfonder. I have yet to read one of her books, though I have just barely bought one and will be reading it next. She made a point at her website about reviews and "Was this review helpful?" options that was very important to authors and to readers. So, to Hannah Howell - thank you for your wonderful books, please keep writing and I'll keep reading. To Sue-Ellen Welfonder - thank you for your thought provoking words, I'll follow through with them, and look forward to reading your books. And to readers everywhere, enjoy your books!
