I, unfortunately, am not. I got only halfway through this book before I finally rolled my eyes and gave up. Why? Maybe it was the overuse of Scottish "buzzwords" like "cannae," "weel," "mayhap," mixed with modern slang like Avery saying "Ouch." to Cameron after he had told her his tale of rejection. Come on. "Ouch"? After you've just had 100+ pages of aye's and nay's and...

In 1458, tempers run high as honor is questioned and debts are paid. Sir Bearnard DeVaux takes cat-eyed Avery Murray and her young cousin Gilliananne during a raid on her family, turning them over to Sir Cameron MacAlpin in repayment of gambling debt. Quite a boon, considering the fact that Cameron holds Avery's brother responsible for his sister's rape. Her capture seems the perfect opportunity to make not just her brother pay for his sister's honor, but her whole family.

Cameron has remained celibate for three years following betrayal by women intent upon deception. He does not appreciate Avery's ability to stir desires that he's held tightly controlled. As the fiery and spirited Avery promises mayhem and murder for capture, the passion between she and Cameron builds with every page, escalating into a sensual tease interspersed with forays into danger. Having retreated from the game of love, Cameron is surprised to discover a woman who, rather than filled with faithlessness and betrayal, proves her loyalty when she saves the lives of his men. As his carefully guarded heart falls to the beautiful highland lass, spirits run high and passion reigns.

Rich in historical detail with headstrong characters, this fast-paced romance will delight fans of Hannah Howell's highland series. The light humor and verbal sparring between the hero and heroine keeps the reader amused as these delightful characters find their way to love. Indeed, the cat-eyed Avery with her audacity and family loyalty adds a sassy element to this highland tale, making HIGHLAND KNIGHT highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy with Howell, June 7, 2001

I have enjoyed all of Hannah Howell's Highland Books. Highland Knight takes you on a journey not only through France and Scotland, but through the lifes of wonderful characters. The complexity of the two main characters, Avery and Cameron, gives a realness to the story that makes the pages keep turning. Avery has been given to Cameron to repay a debt. What is a man to do with a beautiful beguiling woman? Set out to seduce her of course. But Avery is not about to just let a man take her chastity. She turns the tables and seduces him. And in the gamble hopes to find the love of a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highland Knight by Hannah Howell, September 5, 2001
By A Customer
I loved this book. The heroine has heart. She's bold, honest and even though she is small, she has her wits. The hero admires and is even a little astonished at her abilities. I enjoy a book that doesn't make all women out to be some tissue snivelling weaklings. I read it 3 times, and laughed each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The chevalier and the wee cat . . ., November 28, 2001

Ms Howell quickly captures your attention with her descriptions of the characters, their humorous interactions, and the pace of the book. Cameron (the hero) captures your heart with his strong but wounded persona. Avery (the heroine) and her sister Gilly leave you cheering as they determine what buttons to push within their dark knight and his companions. Watch for some entertaining and interesting dynamics between some of the secondary characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second book in the Murray daughters' trilogy, April 29, 2005
In this second book in the Highland trilogy featuring the Murray daughters, we see how Avery, daughter of Nigel and Gisele (HIGHLAND HONOR), ensnare her own knight.

While visiting the Lucettes in France with her cousin Gillyanne, Avery Murray finds herself in trouble when the Deveauxs attacked the Lucette keep. Taken as prisoner, she was tossed at the feet of Cameron McAlpin, a Scottish mercenary who has sold his sword to the DeVeaux. Having sworn himself to a life of celibacy three years ago, Cameron didn't care much for Avery but when he learns of her identity, he decides to use her against Payton Murray, Avery's brother, whom his sister has accused of dishonoring her.

Avery is outraged at Cameron's accusations knowing that her brother isn't capable of such crime. But what she finds more appalling is her intense attraction to him and his arrogance in declaring that he will make her pay for her brother's crimes not by force, but by seduction.

And boy does he succeed in seducing her! The love scenes are hot and definitely the most daring in the series so far. I loved Avery's boldness and the fact that Cameron is not so worldly like the heroes in other novels. When they say that this book is full of adventure, they're not only referring to the journey back to Scotland or the battles in between.

HIGHLAND KNIGHT is an exciting and hilarious read with funny characters. You will enjoy the verbal spats between the main characters. And another great thing about this is the involvement of Gillyanne and Cameron's cousin Leargan. Gillyane is just so delightful that she manages to shine in every scene, while Leargan adds some wit to the dialogues as well.

I highly recommend this book and also HIGHLAND BRIDE, which is little Gilly's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spirited Captives that Win Cameron's Heart (and Yours), June 24, 2006
This is the second time that I have read this book. I loved it and couldn't put it down. It is a delightful and entertaining scottish romance. The story is about scots Avery and her cousin Gillyanne who are visiting their cousins in France when they are kidnapped and given to a scotsman as payment for a debt owed. Cameron is heading back to Scotland to deal with his sister Katherine who claims she was raped by Peyton (Avery's brother) and now is carrying his child. Avery and Gillyanne are spirited captives that give Cameron a run for his money. The story is well-written and will have you laughing out loud. Gillyanne is my favorite character and her story is Highland Bride.

Come on. "Ouch"? After you've just had 100+ pages of aye's and nay's and didnae's? Either use modern vernacular or Scottish vernacular, but don't use both.

Oh, and how about how she had a girl, barely 13, talking like a grown woman, sagely giving out "Dr. Laura" type advice about men to a girl six years older than her. Either write the character as a 13-year-old, or write her as a woman. Don't write a 13-year-old character that TALKS like a woman. Oh, and who is also perfect in every way, can do everything including heal the sick and wounded and sing like an angel, so much so that all the men around her get stunned to distraction by her beautiful voice. If I could insert a rolling eye smiley in here, I would. Is the story about Avery or Gillyanne? Make up your mind. I was sick of "Gillyanne" by page 160. If I ever pick up a Howell book again, I'll make sure it's not one about "Gillyanne."

The plotline was weak and just plodded along. I really dislike stories where there's one traumatic event after another after another. She runs away, then she comes back, then she runs away again, then she comes back, then she's kidnapped, then she comes back, then she bravely jumps into a raging river to save someone, gets a deathly fever, then she recovers, then she runs away again. Are you kidding me???

That last time she ran away was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I couldn't finish the book after that, and I'm hesitating to pick up another of Howell's books at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful romance, May 24, 2001
In 1458 France, Sir Bearnard captures Avery Murray and her thirteen year old cousin Gillyanne during a raid. Bearnard uses both women to pay off a dice debt he owes mercenary Sir Cameron MacAlpin. To Cameron nothing could be sweeter than Avery because she is the sister of Payton, the man who allegedly raped his sibling. Cameron heads back to the Highlands planning to use Avery as a pawn to obtain the truth.

However, Cameron's perfect plan turns out to have a flaw as he finds himself very attracted to his hostage. To her chagrin, Avery returns his feelings. As they fall in love, the specter of what really happened between Payton and his sister hangs over the area like a shroud. The clan honor for avenging the heinous crime of rape needs to be addressed without hurting Avery.

Hannah Howell's latest Highland romance is an amusing yet serious historical romance. The story line centers on different types of relationships, which include that of the lead couple and those within and between clans. Fifteenth century Scotland comes alive through the antics of feisty but pint-sized Avery and the reactions of the angry HIGHLAND KNIGHT Cameron to her actions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful~ Highly Recomended, November 29, 2011
This review is from: Highland Knight (Paperback)
What a wonderful read. I Love when it is based and where it is based.
The Charters were wonderful. Avery is the payment for a debt and her cousin as well. Cameron MacAlpin is the one the debt is owed. He is not sure what to do with the young woman at his feet. Soon after he finds out who she is; He might know then ~wink~ not going to tell you. That would not leave you anything to read.
I recommend this book that is for sure. I love how Hannah Howell writes this story!!
I love Highland books there is just something so romantic and mysteries about that time and place. And you know the man in kilts help too.
