From Booklist

Claire is used to dealing with fortune hunters, but her beautiful half sister, Tessa, is not. When Claire hears that Tessa is considering breaking up with her fiance, Spencer, for a handsome American, she knows that she has to protect Tessa from the cad. But Tessa's new romantic interest is Ewan Geddes, a former servant at their Scottish estate who has recently returned from America. Still convinced that Ewan is only interested in Tessa's money, Claire decides to offer him a more tempting target: herself. The only problem is that the more Claire tries to lure Ewan away from Tessa, the less certain she is that she is doing this for her sister rather than for herself. A sensible heroine who considers herself too plain for any man to be interested in anything but her fortune engages in a wonderfully amusing battle of wits and wills with a charming hero determined to prove to her that there is more than one kind of beauty in Hale's sparklingly witty Victorian historical. 3.0 out of 5 stars Sexy Scottish hero and forbidden passion - who could ask for more...?, July 20, 2008
This review is from: Highland Rogue (Harlequin Historical) (Mass Market Paperback)
Though the sensuality rating is a bit tepid for my taste, it's still a sweet read.

Back of the book synopsis:

Ewan Geddes, exiled from his home in Scotland to America, reads of Tessa's engagement in the newspaper. Having grown up as a servant to the Talbot family, Ewan recalls the young girl that epitomizes beauty to him. Now that he has made his fortune in the new world, he finds himself in a position to take possession of the things that have eluded him: A beautiful bride and acceptance in the society that fought to hold him down as a youth.

Although reconciled to spinsterhood, Claire finds herself once again stepping in to protect her flighty step-sister from herself. Claire and her stepmother plot to have Claire distract Ewan from his prize and determine if his motives are true, unaware that he has amassed his fortune in America. What Claire doesn't reckon on are her own suppressed feelings for the handsome highlander.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine Victorian romance, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Highland Rogue (Harlequin Historical) (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1875, Lady Lydiard Talbot visits her stepdaughter Claire, who partially owns Brancasters Marine Works. The weeping lady tells Claire that her daughter Tessa is thinking of breaking off her engagement with Spencer Stanton, whose family owns a large shipping company that happens to be a good customer of Brancasters. Apparently fortune hunter Ewan Geddes has gotten Tessa to reconsider her upcoming nuptials. Claire promises to talk with Tessa.

Claire meets Ewan at a reception and recognizes him as the servant who stole her heart ten years ago before vanishing. Seeing him reminds her of her father's admonition that no man would desire a plain girl like her; they would only want her wealth. Ewan realizes that he pursues the wrong Talbot as he never got over Claire. However, she would never believe that he loved her as a lad and loves her even more as an adult, as everyone knows he is just what her father described, a handsome HIGHLAND ROGUE after her fortune not her.

Victorian romance fans will value this fine tale starring two protagonists who have no reasons to trust the other. The story line is often humorous especially when Claire and Ewan battle, which is much of the novel. Ewan and Claire make a fine couple though at times the heroine seems spineless with handling family members in spite of her work as owner manager of a major firm and her firmness with Ewan. Still this is a fine late eighteenth century tale that uses the industrial revolution as a backdrop to the era.
