Book Description

Highland soldier Callum MacDonell battled lowland Covenanters at the service of the King. Now charged with hunting an assassin, his journey would lead not to justice, but to a murderer's passionate Covenanter sister, Mari McEwan.

Betrayed and abandoned by the man she loved, Mari faced judgment by a tribunal of her people demanding she name the father of her unborn child, or be exiled from everything she knows.

Only an enemy soldier could save her life--and her heart.

Book 1 in the Highland Soldiers series, Scottish historical romances set during the turbulent Covenanter times of 17th century Scotland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and captivating May 19, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the first book I have read by J.L. Jarvis and I was more than thoroughly impressed. The story was exciting, the characters entertaining and the romance sweet and endearing. Callum was a wonderful hero and I absolutely adored him and Mari was a strong heroine. Their chemistry could be felt from their very first meeting. The secondary characters of Alex, Duncan, Charlie and Hughie added a fun touch to the story and I enjoyed their friendly banter as it was at times humorous and very much the way it would be between true friends. There is no doubt that I will want to read the rest of the books in this series. For those who are offended by graphic love scenes, the love scenes between Callum and Mari were tastefully done, not overly descriptive. This was a wonderful story and one I highly recommend to any who love Highland historical romances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read! October 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I REALLY enjoyed Highland Soldiers: The Enemy. I was swept into the story from the first pages and I couldn't stop reading. I loved the way the author tied in how Mari and Callum first met with Callum's past. That the decisions they make together in the Highlands helps the story to come full circle. How Callum rescues her from the tribunal (who wouldn't want to be rescued like that). Every time I thought the story line would straighten out and relax for a bit there was another twist or disaster or deceit that would tear Callum and Mari apart. I loved all of the characters including the secondary ones. Callum's friends were all wonderful and I hope to see stories for Alex, Charlie, and poor Duncan. I wasn't bothered by the few editing or spelling errors that I saw. But I do like the other cover better....

I liked the way the characters realized the love they had was special and learned not to let outside influences destroy that. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series. I highly recommend this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and clean with some really funny parts June 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoy the tried and true story formula of the Scottish clan wars and romances....always good for fun, relaxing reading. This book kept my interest better than most. She also did it while keeping the book clean. There were enough twists that I was not sure how the story line was going to be resolved. There were some parts that seemed a bit weak in the storyline....things jumped around in some parts without clear explanations which is why I only gave this a 4 star rating. Otherwise I be would have gladly given it a 5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Highland Soldiers: The Enemy November 23, 2013
By Fluffy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story started off slowly, so slow in fact I almost put it down to quit reading. I hung in there and was glad I did. Not the best story I've read, but it did improve the further along I went. It kept developing a better storyline as I went along with more defined characters. Love scenes were rather non-descript, but you got the message. Worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read!!! July 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok, I'm only in the middle of this book but noticed, since it didn't have any reviews, I'll review what I've read so far ... this is a really good book and I have no doubt it'll be great till the finish. It's about a 100 times better than many others I've read. The storyline flows, for it's time period it's logical, plus there is good character development. If there are editing problems I guess I didn't notice. I really do like this author and will make a point to save the name, I have every intention of reading everything this author writes.

4.0 out of 5 stars HIghland Soldiers November 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although this was predictable in some ways, other parts came as a total surprise. The actual story kept my interest and the setting and time period are among favorites to read about.

There were a few times I was surprised when modern language popped up. However, there was not enough to distract from the story.

I think the story gave a nice snapshot of how times were during the mid 1640s.

I did enjoy the book, I don't remember reading about this part of Scots history. Enjoyable, even though the heroine at times seems dim.
