Night Owl Reviews' Top Pick

5-Stars
What a Great Story! I think this is one of the best of the best. Absolutely one of the best I've ever read. This book kept showing up on my Kindle recommendations list. I never tried it because I was unfamiliar with the author. I was hesitant to give it a try. Then came the opportunity to read and review all three books in the trilogy. Being a great fan of Highlander romances I just couldn't pass it up. Taking that chance on this author was one of the best reading choices that I've ever made. Awesome Talent!!!

4 Stars
Amidst conflict, controversy and war, a powerful love story flourishes from book one of the Highlands trilogy and lovers of romance will be elated. Saxons' vision is impeccable, and it's blatantly obvious she did plenty of research before she penned this saga. The backdrop of the Highlands is described with such fine detail, one can almost feel the warmth from the stoked fire crackling in the hearth and smell the fresh bannock cakes and trenchers of mutton. History buffs and fans of passion and adventure alike will embrace this novel and will be eager to grab book two.

I have read at least 85 Highlander Kindle books since i bought my book from Amazon in 2011. I do believe this is The best one so far. H.E. Saxon will have to write many more to out do this one!
The romance is in it's glory in this book! The first chapter in this story was very frightening! I didn't think that i was going to finish it! The gory subtance was chilling! But i did continue and the whole story from then on was amazing! The slaughter of Daniel's family, the fighter that this young lad became and the meeting of his great love, becoming laird of his clan and the sex! Wow! if you enjoy reading hot love making and true love this book is a must!
I didn't want it to end! I will surely read this one again a little later, so I'm saving it. I also read Book 2, it takes up where this one ends. please! Please read--H.E.Saxon is one of the better writers of the Highlander series.

Wow! I don't even know where to start with this book. I loved it so much! The book had everything: romance, erotica, revenge, humor, kindness, sorrow. A great thing about the book was it has suprises and shocker jumping out at you constantly. The synopsis tells you about Daniel Maclaurin and how at a young age his family and clan were destroyed and how he took vegence and rebuilt his life and clan. At sixteen, he meets young Maryn Donald, a spoiled, unruly little lass that he can't wait to get away from. Years later he is requested to marry her to settle disputes between clans but has no problem in doing so as she has become a true beauty on the inside and out. You pretty much think the story is going to be about them but their lives interact with so many people during the book that characters are constanly being interduced. Speaking of characters, they are great and at the end you will noticed that some of these's characters stories are not finished. Yes, there is going to be two more books so far (I know is says trilogy but I can always wish for more) and I can not wait to read them :) I would definitely recommend this book. Tis only my second book that I have read of Mrs. Saxons but I'm already hooked and along with the rest of the Highland series, I can't wait to see what else she has to offers.

I was really disappointed. I'm a fan of Scottish Historical Romance and was expecting a lot because of the good reviews from this book. But I found myself having to stop reading because I kept getting irritated! Daniel fell in love WAY too easily and quickly with Maryn. I feel that Saxon overdid his gentleness. There was little depth to his love for her in the beginning; he doesn't know a lot about Maryn and her qualities, but finds himself falling in love with her??? The book just gets more annoying because of their petty issues. He is "heartbroken" but from what really?? For opening his heart? Not really, he's only known her for days! The story is frustrating. I also don't like how the author uses small scenes one after another, it gets very very frustrating. Saxon really overdid the lovey dovey in here, at least please have some depth to it before you write about their heartbreaks please! It really didn't deserve the high ratings. Next time I'll stick to authors I can trust; like Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, and Paula Quinn.

Set in the 13th century highlands, a young lad becomes laird after his family is slaughtered. The relationships and characters are well defined, and you can't help but feel the emotions of each. One of the best highlander series I've read. You can't go wrong with this book, and you'll be addicted to read the next 2 in the series as well.

This story isn't just about the hero and heroine. There is an extensive cast of secondary characters who are worthy of their own stories. It is about real people with real problems. They struggle with love, hate, jealousy, envy and insecurity. If you enjoy highly sensual love scenes... then this is the book for you. And if you love a swoon worthy hero... then this is the book for you. And if you love a hell raising heroine who's not afraid to speak her mind...then this is the book for you. I happen to love all that stuff...so this is the book for me. I'll give it five flying stars.

Although I didn't hate this book, I am always disappointed when an author is unable to keep the writing set in the correct time period. I really wanted to like this book but it was difficult to keep my mind in the right era when there were too many modern phrases thrown into the speech of the characters. I also felt that the love making scenes were very poorly written; they did not even get a butterfly to flutter in my stomach.

More About the Author

K.E. Saxon is a third-generation Texan and has been a lover of romance fiction since her first (sneaked) read of her older sister's copy of "The Flame and the Flower" by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. She is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romance Divas. When she isn't in her writer's cave writing, you can find her puttering in her organic vegetable garden or in her kitchen trying out a new recipe. An animal (and bug) lover since before she could speak, she made pets of all kinds of critters when she was a kid growing up. Her mother even swears that she made a pet of a cockroach one time (but K.E. doesn't believe her). She likes to write funny, sexy romances.
