Product Description

The vivid scar that spans Sir Iain MacLagan's cheek is a daily reminder of the wife he lost - and of the enemy that still stalks him. Commanded by Scotland's king to remarry in order to unite two powerful border clans, lain reluctantly weds Islaen MacRoth, a woman whose delicate appearance belies a playful, seductive nature that proves dangerously attractive to a man who has vowed never to jeopardize his heart, or his loved ones, again...Raised with eleven boisterous brothers, Islaen has little time for foolish romantic notions. Even so, she hoped for more than a forced marriage to a man who shares her bed, but not her life. Step by step, Islaen sets out to wear down Iain's defenses.

4.0 out of 5 stars buyer beware, December 25, 2007
This review is from: Highland Wedding (Paperback)
This is a good book with a captivating storyline but then i would expect no less from Hannah Howell. The main characters are well rounded and realistic. They bring to life the story. Helping this is the fact that the minor characters are vivid as well.
However, just a word of caution for those of you who have read Hannah's previous books - THIS IS A REPRINT - it was previously entitled Promised Passion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best but not her worst., November 29, 2007

I own all of Hannah Howell's books and love most of them. This is not one I loved. It started out interesting as the two main characters end up getting married. The night before their wedding the heroine sneaks into the grooms room to tell him her terrible secret so that he can prevent the marriage if he wants to. Her secret is a Dolly Parton type chest that immediately inflames the hero and causes them to have their wedding night the night before the wedding. The scene where hero and heroine are caught in bed the next morning is very funny.

Unfortunately the plot is not strong enough to keep the book going strong and it lost my interest. I did finish it but it was definitely not her best work. I will still buy her books and I am looking forward to "Highland Wolf" her next book due out soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oldies not necessarily goodies, November 17, 2007

First let me say I love Hannah Howell; hers are among the books I reread regularly, just to visit with the wonderful characters she's created. I know the criticisms...much of her work is the same plot reworked again and again, but that's true of most romance authors with any longevity. The fact is, it's her people that make it work.

Unfortunately, it's her people that are lacking here. I understand this is a reworking of an earlier book, maybe that accounts for its lack of punch. I certainly liked the character of Ian McLagan in "His Bonnie Bride" (he was the brother of the hero). But in this, his own story, the spark is just missing. I enjoyed catching up with Tavis, Storm and the rest of their families, but this is a trend I've seen in too many recent books (Mine til Midnight comes immediately to mind), where the intrusion of much loved characters from earlier books seems to be intended to divert the reader from the lack of substance in the current book.

I know not every book can be a home run; still, even the weaker books from her earlier series (including surprisingly enough the wonderful character of Payton Murray, whom HH took great pains through several books to make a fascinating character, fell flat in his own book) were rewarding in their own ways.

This one isn't awful, it's just sort of there, like Everest. And for the first time, one of HH's books will go into the "don't read again" pile. I'm hoping that "Highland Wolf", James' story will make up for the lack here. Again, HH created a wonderfully realized, fully dimensional character in James, Gillyanne's adopted brother, who was such a presence in "Highland Bride", one of my favorites.

Truthfully, anyone but Hannah Howell would have gotten less than 3 stars for this one, I'm afraid.
