4.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleasantly Surprised November 25, 2009
Highlander is one of those science fiction franchises with a devout following and enough various incarnations to keep fans entertained no matter their preferred outlet. Big budget motion pictures, a massive live-action television run, comics, animated series, basically if you can't find Highlander in your favorite medium, you simply aren't looking hard enough.

My own history with the property has been sketchy at best with only vague awareness of most of the feature films and an occasional encounter with the live-action television show back when it first came to DVD. I think the trouble with the whole mythos is that while set in a post-apocalyptic time frame and touted as science fiction, the actual structure of the show's delivery much more closely resembles fantasy than it does sci-fi. No disrespect to fantasy intended; it's just a bit of surprise when you go into something expecting Star Trek and end up getting Lord of the Rings.

That brings us to Highlander The Animated Series, which made its broadcast debut back in 1994 (nine years after the franchise officially began as a movie). Like you may have reasoned, I somehow managed to remain oblivious to the show's existence for many years until recommended the 4-disc DVD release based on similar-era animated box set purchase made (think Batman & X-Men The Animated Series).

Long story short, I picked up the box set and was very pleasantly surprised. First let's take a look at the hard facts, shall we?

Released across 4-discs housed in a standard-size DVD clamshell case, Highlander The Complete Animated Series comes in at a runtime of 15 hours (40 episodes). It's presented in 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio and Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround (stereo).

5.0 out of 5 stars Waited a long time for this... January 31, 2010

Worth it! This series was a great reason to justify getting up at 5:30 every morning for school, as long as I could watch an episode of Highlander: the animated series while I had my cereal. I was introduced to this show after having already been a fan of the Live Action series, which I caught syndicated reruns of around the same time slot a year or two earlier, and then followed into late-night times. Worth tracking it down while it was on the air, and worth tracking down again on DVD. I loved all the Bohbot / BKN shows Highlander, Mighty Max, King Arther and the Knights of Justice. Syndicated cartoon series were where you could find REAL writing that didn't pander and would actually help elevate imagination and vocabulary. This show pulled few punches and dealt with death and the deathless in an intelligent and still kid-friendly manner. I hope more shows like this from its era make their way to full series DVD release, I'm already in line.

I bought this again after I had bought Exo-squad, Gargoyles and the Xmen cartoons from the fox network. I was sure that Highlander the animated series would have weathered almost two decades as well some others. Upon reflection the only thing I can say about it is that it probably illustrates how heavily I was into Highlander when I was 13 more then anything else. Its also a fantastic illustration of what ultimately killed the Highlander franchise when you run out of ideas just shift the setting to a vague post apocalyptic word make sure we know absolutely no one in it and give the audience no incentive to sympathize or care for the characters involved
I suppose judging the show on its merits as a simple villain of the week cartoon I shouldn’t be so harsh but that’s the problem more then a few animation shows of the 90s had established villains and a coherent mythology that if it wasn’t award winning or groundbreaking was at least watchable but Highlander the animated series has no such examples just basically the same storyline every week with Quintin expected to learn a different moral lesson.

Overall-After 10 episodes or so you will find yourself rooting for Kortan. Sometimes nostalgia is a great indicator of what animation you will like as an adult and sometimes it is not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another fun Highlander outlet October 11, 2010

This is definately for those somewhere in between liking cartoons but not an older age person and fan of the original movies/series. Decent animation most of the time, but hard to keep watching, meaning that it's not as addicting as the movies or the tv series. A good by for the youngsters or those looking to collect everything Highlander.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice plots, some action, great price May 5, 2013

This is a good buy, but the artist isn't really good of the times. But the plot is great. Price is good to for a series. Good for kids though if they want to sit down and watch something different.
