Editorial Reviews

1 disc Highlights edition, starring multiplatinum artist Josh Groban, Tony-winning Idina Menzel
(Wicked) and Tony nominated Adam
Pascal (RENT), Chess In Concert
revives the eclectic yet wonderfully
pop 1984 concept album featuring the music of ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and lyrics of Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, The
Lion King, Evita). Recorded at
London's Royal Albert Hall in May 2008, this spectacular Chess In Concert introduced by Rice and with the 50- piece City of London Philharmonic and 100-voice West End Chorus finally fulfills the promise of the popular cult musical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Groban scores with Chess, July 14, 2009

I was attracted to this because I am a fan of Josh Groban and watched Chess the Concert on TV initially. Having not heard of the production previously, both the music and story-line were completely new. I discovered beautiful music, lyrics and a complex but moving romatic story, but interwoven with a bit of life choices we all face. I must admit I was at first uncertain of Groban's choice as the Russian chess champion, but his magnificient voice carried his vocal performances all the way. In addition, his acting was surprising well done. A great professional cast and direction sold the DVD and CD for me! Again, a big stretch for Josh, but he never ceases to amaze.

Of all the versions of "Chess" I've heard, this one is the most poignant and classic-with heartbreaking performances by Idina Menzel and a surprising Josh Groban. The clear and informative notes by Tim Rice clarify the updating of the 1980's plot and make it timeless. Adam Pascal adds a wonderful dimension to the "ugly American" and make this recording a must have for any fan of musical theatre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect (Chess) Match for Broadway, November 5, 2011

This review is from: Highlights From Chess in Concert (Audio CD)
Fantastic casting for this concert production: Idina Menzel, Josh Grobin, and Adam Pascal really deliver vocally.
This original musical's popularity was dwarfed by "Phantom of the Opera" ... late 80's in London. It's time for a Broadway revival with these three musical theater pros.
