Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Useful tidbits abound in this celebration of the evil weed; for instance, the residue of government-promoted hemp farming during World War II may be found "today as `ditch weed,' a very low potency marijuana, which offers its users a hyperventilation high and a four-alarm headache." With its eye-catching cover, the playful publication may itself induce hyperventilation and multialarm headaches in minions of decency, especially because it is very much pro-cannabis. Indeed, its profuse illustrations include depictions of purported drug use: for instance, the Marx Brothers embracing a hookah in A Night in Casablanca accompanied by Chico's recollection that as boys they collected "our pennies, our marbles, a piece of candy, a little marijuana, whatever we could pick up." Of course, there is a chapter on sex, though surprisingly little on Rastafarians or reggae. An excellent book for libraries willing to serve potheads, whose numbers, if we are to believe incarceration statistics, mount ever higher, so to speak. Mike Tribby

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Cannabis Aficionado, March 25, 2000

This review is from: Highlights: The Illustrated History of Cannabis (Paperback)
This book is a wonderful compilation of the history of cannabis/marijuana and is superbly illustrated with many drawings and photographs. The authors do a great job of presenting the information about this plant without being biased towards legalization or total criminalization issues. After reading this book in a local library, I decided I needed to have a copy for myself. Thanks, Amazon, for having it in stock at such a great price.
