5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, January 24, 2005
This review is from: Highpocket's War Stories (Paperback)
This is an outstanding read. Anyone interested in the Naval Academy, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the Marine Corps and in Hunting should find this book a great attraction. It is told with humor and sensitivity. One of the best books I've read in a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wit and Wisdom of a Combat Leader, January 7, 2005
This review is from: Highpocket's War Stories (Paperback)
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Witty and engaging, but at the same time, thought provoking and full of wisdom. Leadership is an art. Like any other form of art it requires energy, enthusiasm and creativity. A select few are masters of this art form, blessed with the intuition and insight which mark the truly great leader. Colonel Hilgartner is such a leader. The anecdotes which pepper his narrative provide valuable lessons for those who would lead others, whether in battle or in business. The short vignettes which make up this book make it an ideal read for subway commuters and others who are often interrupted. Its easy-going humor and thoughtful insights make it a book which I will go back to over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Combat Leadership, January 5, 2005
This review is from: Highpocket's War Stories (Paperback)
This book is an easy read about achievement of goals and successful leadership of Marines. It focuses on three important battles in Vietnam fought in the spring/summer of 1967 by a Marine officer who also served in Korea. His competency and bravery as a soldier are inspirational to me as I also served in Vietnam. There are great anecdotes about him and his men and the combat stories are gripping. I don't usually like books about Vietnam but this one was an enjoyable read.

This review is from: Highpocket's War Stories (Paperback)
I served under LtCol Hilgartner in Vietnam and enjoyed my time serving under him. He was quite a different kind of leader, one of those guys who led from the front, not the rear.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOOAH - Combat Leadership 101, February 26, 2005
This review is from: Highpocket's War Stories (Paperback)
This is a wonderful and insightful read. COL Hilgartners literary approach to his experiences in Korea and Vietnam is simple but poignant. Leadership is an art, but this tried and tested combat commander provides his readers with the basic foundation necessary to develop successful warriors even in todays modern military. The author uses anecdotes of his times in the Naval Academy, serving in multiple facets of Marine Corps life, and even his hunting expeditions in the woods of Northern Virgina to ensure the book is fun while at the same time teaching a critical lesson. Even this Marine's insights will be good for those of us that call the Army home - Three HOOAHs for this book. Outstanding Job, Semper Fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent !!! Very grasping adventures!! You must read !, January 8, 2011
Was I ever wrong! I thought that since this is a book about Marines, it would be drawn out and boring. Let me tell you, it is very well written with each adventure real for men and women. I was drawn into each adventure feeling the emotions of all of the characters. It caused every emotion to come out especially the respect and at times fear.

The book quickly became a page turner and enthralled me. This book is well worth your time!!!! Enjoy!
