Book Description

May 15, 1999
The Highway Angler is the most comprehensive and informative guide book yet published about sport fishing Alaska's roadside waters. Packed with facts, cross-referenced, and easy to read, The Highway Angler tells you everything you need to know--locations, access, species available, terminal gear, techniques, timing, and much more! It lists in detail more than 700 rivers, creeks, lakes, and salt water hot spots along the state's major roads and highways from the U.S.-Canada border and the highland drainages of Yukon and Tanana rivers to Kachemak Bay and the popular Kenai Peninsula, and from the frigid coast of the Arctic Ocean to the surf-swept shores of Prince William Sound.

For nearly a decade, The Highway Angler has successfully guided thousands of people, both novice and experts, in discovering some of the best fishing in the world. This book is a must for any angler, whether local or visiting, who hopes to wet a line along Alaska's vast road system. These pages provide a thorough look at the opportunities available and the sport fish that inhabit the cold waters of The Last Frontier.

About the Author

Gunnar Pedersen was born and raised in Scandinavia where his passion for sport fishing first came to light. After moving to Anchorage, Alaska in 1979, Gunnar shifted his angling interests to the cold rivers, lakes, and bays of the state, where he fished and studied these waters avidly, keeping exhaustive notes of his experiences. Those notes, enhanced by years of technical and biological research, became the fodder for this book.

After a brief stint as a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay in the 1980's, majoring in Business Management at the University of Alaska in Anchorage, and running a guide business for anglers during the summer, Gunnar now tends to his own publishing business and, jointly with his wife Shayla, a health and wellness consultation company. He also instructs Kung Fu at the local university.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Highway Angler by Gunnar Pedersen, December 16, 2000

This review is from: The Highway Angler III (Paperback)
I bought the 1992 edition, The All-new Highway Angler, the first year it was available, in a bookstore in Anchorage, and have used it on 4 trips to Alaska. If you are new to Alaska and looking for quality fishing you don't have to access from a float plane, Pederson's book tells you where and when. Recognizing that there are early and late springs, differences in snowfall and amounts of runoff into streams, I've found the book to be a great help in identifying waters to fish. When the book says fish average a certain size, they invariably are that size. Locations of spots to fish are easily found, times of year are accurate, and methods and baits/lures to use for various species are a great help to those new to the region. Whether we fly to Alaska and rent a motorhome or drive to Alaska, we always spend time fishing, and The Highway Angler has not only guided our choices of equipment, it has made the trip up and back often enough it is dog-eared and in need of replacement. Besides, it's a new edition, and there's probably some places in there I've missed!

This review is from: The Highway Angler III (Paperback)
Without a doubt the best guide book to fishing Alaska's roads and highways on the market. Very thorough, detailed, and concise. Bargain price for the rich content. Easy to find information on species and locations as well as useful how-to tips. Having lived and fished in Alaska for over a decade, I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning to fish the state's roadside waters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't fish Alaska without this book!, June 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Highway Angler III (Paperback)
Fishing Alaska's streams and rivers can be difficult. If you're not there when the salmon are, your just getting your line wet... you aren't fishing! This book will tell you when to fish, for what species, for every stream in Alaska. Plan your Alaska fishing trip, guided or unguided, by the salmon runs!
