1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your fifteen bucks!, May 22, 2005

This review is from: Highway Hypodermics: Your Road Map to Travel Nursing (Paperback)
This book doesn't have much information on travel nursing. The writing is absolutely terrible. The grammar and spelling errors are so bad that it's difficult to read at times and makes you wonder how it ever got published. It's as if it was never edited. The author talks way too much about her own experiences and in a weird way. She talks for six pages about her travel assignments in Arizona, including detailed descriptions of every golf course in the area (not a short list) The descriptions of the areas and hospitals she's been to are not even helpful, they sound like tourist brochures. For instance, a line from the book "King City, California...a big adventure in a small community." Who cares, I want information on travel nursing, that's why I bought the book. Trust me, the only thing this book is good for is a laugh. And it also makes you realize the anyone in America can get a book published. Buy Shalon Kearney's "Hitting the Road." It has much more information and commonsense.

I'd like to apologize to Epstein for the above review. I saw she had a new version of her book and happened across my review and realized how mean and uncalled for it was. It got me thinking and I took the book back off the shelf and read most of it again. I can see how it might be somewhat useful to a brand new traveler, especially considering the EXTREME shortage of objective information out there for/about travel nurses. I think that was my biggest beef with this book, I didn't feel like it was objective. I felt like it was more of a journal of her personal experience as a traveler rather than a guide. The review I gave was a product of frustration at not finding the information I needed/wanted as a traveler. Now after 3 years as a traveler, I continue to be frustrated by the lack of accurate information out there. So much of the information we travelers get is sponsored by the agencies that profit from us, and doesn't always lead us down the right path. That is why I had such high expectations for this book, I thought it was going to be the first objective reference for travelers and was disappointed. It didn't meet my expectations but I shouldn't have left such a nasty review. I'll probably buy the newest version just to see the differences.

I have just recieved this book and am about to start my first travel nurse assignment . I felt compelled to write this review because I don't feel the criticism heaped on it by "Mary Schultz RN " is warranted . The book appears well organized and echos what travelers I have talked to have told me . I would like to get Shalon Kearney book as well but the $110.00 price is alittle steep !
