Gravel-voiced Broderick Crawford was the no-nonsense Chief of the Highway Patrol in this 50's action series, which was one of the most popular shows in history. (1955-1959, 156 episodes) Most of Highway Patrol's action took place outdoors, on the sprawling highway system of an unidentified Western state (those official-looking emblems on the police cars read simply: "Highway Patrol"). There was lots of hardware - patrol cars, motorcycles, and occasional helicopters - and Chief Mathews was always leaning on the side of a car, microphone in hand, bellowing orders. Broderick Crawford died in 1986, from a stroke and will be sorely missed.

THE COPY I RECEIVED WAS DEFECTIVE. THE SERIES, HOWEVER, IS UNQUESTIONABLY THE BEST COP DRAMA OF ALL TIME. THIS IS A COLLECTION THAT YOU WILL RETURN TO TIME AND TIME AGAIN. CRAWFORD, AS DAN MATTHEWS, IS SUPERB-- FAR BETTER THAN ANY CRIME FIGHTER IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION. HE IS SMART, CLEVER, HEROIC, AND SMOOTH WITHOUT SEEMING PRETENTIOUS. HE IS THE GENUINE ARTICLE. I HAVE ALWAYS MARVELED AT CRAWFORD'S ACTING ABILITY IN DELIVERING HIS LINES LIKE A TOMMY GUN. HE IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE. JACK WEB WAS A CLOSE 2ND, BUT CRAWFORD WAS THE BEST I'VE EVER WITNESSED. HOW DID HE DO IT? YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH EVEN A SINGLE EPISODE OF THIS SERIOUS SAVE ANY TECHNICAL PROBLEMS. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO BUY.

I watched this series as a kid in the 1950's and have been searching for it on Amazon for years. Why hasn't it been released on DVD yet. What is the problem? Are they waiting until all who remember it are dead?
