5.0 out of 5 stars Music, Love, Art, Passion,......in South America's best, November 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hijos Del Sol (Children of the Sun) (Audio CD)
If you have ever heard the Gypsy Kings, Inti Illimani, Santana or Sol y Canto, you will realize that all of these bands pale in comparison to the uplifting energy and power of this masterfull band. Viva Quetzal has truly developed a new sound, which they can brand as their very own. You may probably wonder, how many times you've heard something like this been said of very many bands?. Yet, this is true about the incredible world-sound of Quetzal. Take a chance and get to know what good music writing and performing is all about. The first three tracks of the album: TARAPACA, SAYA MESTIZA AND HIJOS DEL SOL are a testament to the artistry of Quetzal. The real killer of this album though is IN THE KINDOM OF THE CONDORS, what a creative, solid and amazing composition! Mixing the pipes with electric guitar and sax for leads, all over a pillow of strings and off-beat druming was a piece of mastery. The only low point of the album is the song titled PEACE. Stick to your own music guys!, leave alone over-done, uncreative, boring jazz tunes for the rest, you're much better than that. For sure, a must own for any serious music lover!!!!, Do you have any other recordings???

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh winds from the South!, March 27, 1999

This review is from: Hijos Del Sol (Children of the Sun) (Audio CD)
I must say after listening to the three CD's that I am absolutely impressed ! I didn't expect to hear something that good. It is difficult to find a lot of positive words in English, but I am impressed This is the best I have heard since a long time! I wouldn't call your style pure "andean folklore", "andean folklore" in the context of what we know as the andean "native" music, because you have intergrated a lot of latin style/jazz into your music and the context of your style is latin/african/european. Andean folklore was and still is in it's original content, music played at fiestas in the high andes, and also usually they have musicians and one man bands who play when people are working at the fields, in funerals, and in childbirhts and a lot of other reasons for celebrations or sorrows of everyday andean life. Any way, you managed to intergrate a lot of the old from both tradisionally andean and modern rhythm into a new more "spiced" order, and the use of the andean wind instruments add a certain touch to it that is good to listen to, and your cd's are certainly worth to own! I haven't heard anything so good since the days of Los Jaivas. The basic andean breat continued into a fresh modern style are absolutelly perfect. You have integrated a numerous list of styles into one fusion and this sounds great!

I've seen Quetzal play live and own all their CD. Their last album is composed of provocative lyrics accompanied by wonderful Andean rhythms. A must buy!!!

Viva Quetzal's music beckons the core of all human existence. The high-energy, Afro-Andean World-Beat rythms contained on Hijos del Sol will drive you dance. The complicated, multi-layered combination of intriguing rythms will force you to listen with intensity. Viva Quetzal's amazing sound will lift your spirits and tranfuse the mystical essence of the Andeas into your being. I've witnessed them performing live and Viva Quetzal strongly appeals to individuals of all ages (children & adults) and all ethnicities. I personally own all three CDs and you should consider owning them too! Don't miss out on their fabulous fusion of sounds!

5.0 out of 5 stars North and South fuse seamlessly, August 3, 1998
This review is from: Hijos Del Sol (Children of the Sun) (Audio CD)
How do they do it? These guys create ageless, heartbreaking sounds - bamboo, wood, and leather noises-- surging up from a deep dark forgotten place; a place of ancient, crumbling stone, a place filled with steaming primeval equatorian jungle sighs and moans, animal cries -- and then weave the coolest, most avant-garde textures, rhythms, and texts into it...simultaneously, seamlessly, consistently. An impossible feat, a rare delight. Where have these guys been? Where did they come from?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabuloso!, December 21, 1998

Quetzal came to our high school and the students could not get enough of them! They are as good live as they are in their recordings. Hijos del Sol represents the best in Quetzal, a blend of South and North American sounds, high energy and loads of fun. They are true originals.
