Sequoia and Kings Canyon, two adjoining parks just south of Yosemite, are among the premier hiking destinations in California. Most of the land they encompass is wilderness and roads only touch upon the western boundaries of these parks. Some of the best backpacking in the state is found in these two parks. But most visitors barely have time for a few days, or in some cases a few hours, and this is where Laurel Scheidt's book comes in. It offers twenty hikes, with relatively little elevation gain (relative is the key word here--in the southern Sierras, less than 2,000 feet might be considered easy) that can be hiked in an hour or at most half a day. All are readily accessible to the roadway.

For the most part, this is the same book as the first edition. The hikes have not changed. Scheidt still divides the park into seven geographical regions and offers two to four hikes in each. Classics such as Crescent Meadow, the General Grant Loop, and Tokopah Falls are all in this book. Each hike includes a sketch map, detailed directions to the trailhead (with GPS coordinates) and a point to point route description.

A few things have changed. Scheidt's introduction is a little longer and covers more of the flora and fauna found in the region. Many of the reviewers of the first edition wanted to see more along these lines and she has obliged. New trailheads have been noted, particularly for the popular Congress Trail. What was a 1.9 mile hike is now a 2.7 mile trek due to the park service moving the trail head for the General Sherman tree. It is still well worth your time as this is the premier hike in the Giant Forest. On the downside, the sketch maps are actually a little less detailed in the second edition of the book than the first.

I own both this book, as well as the full sized version it's excerpted from. Pay the extra ten dollars (or whatever it might be and get the full version) and you won't be disappointed.

This book lacks the focus a day-hike publication needs. However, the full sized version has traveled to Sequoia with me three times for well over a hundred miles of hikes in various parts of the park.

Useful summary of available hikes although the trails seem to be changing from year to year as the rangers want to cut down on trail wear!

This looks like what I wanted. It arrived on time. I won't have a chance to use it until spring. Nice size for taking on hikes.
