NEW second edition coming out April 1, 2003,
By
This review is from: 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon (Paperback)
Hi, this is Bill Sullivan, the author of this book. Because of the large fires in Southern Oregon this past summer, I've decided to completely update this book. I've rehiked the trails and discovered some interesting new paths. The old edition is now out of print, but I'll have the new second edition available April 1, 2003 -- at the same price. I think it will be worth the wait!

Sullivan's books are accurate!,

I'm a bit puzzled by the previous review, because Sullivan'sbooks really do have fewer factual errors than most. In fact, he claims to offer a reward to anyone who reports an actual error -- this info is on page 2 of the book -- and he updates the book often, as you can tell by the copyright dates. If the reviewer above really has found a glitch, I'd suggest he report it to Sullivan (the address listed on Sullivan's Website). Maybe the reviewer has an old edition of the book?

The hikes are well chosen but fact checking is sometimes lax,

I've recently moved to Southern Oregon and this guide has been an invaluable introduction to the hikes in the area. The book is well organized, and does a good job of ranking hikes according to difficulty and seasonality. One failing, however, is the large number of factual errors such as confusing north for south, or mis-stating the number of road miles to the trailhead. These sorts of errors had the positive value of making one more self-sufficient.

I live and hike mostly in Central Oregon and absolutely love Wm. Sullivan's Central Oregon hiking guide. I couldn't do without it. He's not only knowledgable about the hikes, but the history and plant flora as well. No one can beat his maps for accuracy which he draws free hand. Therefore I have decided to purchase his Southern Oregon guide as well which appears to be equally as wonderful. I don't plan to travel to Southern Oregon without taking this guide along with me.

In addition to this one, I have a few of Mr. Sullivan's other titles and his books are very well done. The maps, illustrations, trail descriptions, and background info are great! Well worth the money.

The Definitive Hiking Books For Oregon,
This review is from: 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon (Paperback)
I never leave town without whichever of these books (There are 5 for the different regions of the state) is appropriate for where I'm heading. Whether I'm planning a hike or not, you never know when you might have a few hours to kill and anytime I've caught myself around Oregon without one of these books, I wish I had it with me! The excellent hikes in these books have allowed me to explore this state like I never would have been able to without them. The hikes range from really short to back-packable and I've never gotten lost following his directions. In addition, he brings in history, geology, botany and zoology to give you a really complete tour of the place you're in.

After reading on-line reviews of many hiking books for southern Oregon, I decided to buy this one, and am not at all disappointed. The descriptions of the hikes are brief enough to be readable, yet accurate in detail and full of history and geogology also. A perfect choice for our four month stay in Roseburg.

William Sullivan is Oregon's hiker laureate. In my opinion, there is a simple rule: if Bill is the author of a hiking-related guide book, it is worth purchasing. As with his other books, I have learned about (and visited) many new places thanks to his Southern Oregon book. Eventually I hope to do all of the hikes listed herein. Very highly recommended!
