This book solves arguments!,

This review is from: 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Boston: Including Coastal and Interior Regions, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island (Paperback)
It seems that no matter how many trail maps we carry, my husband and I end up arguing about which way to go at every fork. No more! This book has accompanied us on our last few Saturday hikes, and voila -- no more doubt. The descriptions of the trails are superb -- illustrative and clear. We also enjoy reading the little history snippets.
We heartily recommend sticking this book in your pack and hitting the trails with peace of mind!

I really like the way the trails are clearly laid out. The historical tidbits are a nice touch too. Now I've got a great book to take with me on my libation explorations.

Great guide. In addition to taking the reader on well-known hikes in and around the Boston area, this book introduced me to a number of wonderful new hikes and has led me to discover hidden gems around Boston. It is well written, well organized and has detailed trail descriptions making it an excellent guide that is easy to use. I love all the historic references and the author's descriptions of geology, wildlife and native plants around the trails which make this guide a really interesting and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

This is a great guide to the Boston area with great information about popular hikes like the blue hills and the freedom trail but also information about great locations that where new to me like waters farm and halibut point. The book is also filled with lots of stories about New England history that enlivens the experience of visiting these locations.

As a person who has gotten lost using other walking guide books, I can say this book is really easy to use. I highly recommend it as resource for what to do with a free Saturday afternoon. Also, I really appreciate the driving instructions to the trail head.

I wish they were more flexible in their guides though. There are a lot more trails an options at many of these parks than are included in the book. It is, however a great starting point, and you can have a lot of fun doing exactly what is in the book. I'm an avid hiker and I would prefer more options for longer distances.

As a tourist from outside US, I bought this book in purpose to do some hikes in Boston area.
While the ideas in the book are good, the trail descriptions are not satisfactory. Without a detailed map, it is hard to follow the trail descriptions. I tried for example the Arnold's arboretum hike. The description and the trail map in the book, didn't refer enough to existing trails/roads not included in the recommended hike, so I've lost the trail.. I won't recommend this book for tourists coming from outside Massachusetts. |
