Review

a 100% indispensible handbook when visiting Alaska., March 28, 1998 Reviewer: A reader This is probaly the best hiking book of any such types. truly informative. The pages seem to be made of a light density papyprus product...making it ideal for backpacking. The Author has truly captured the essense of hiking out in the Alaska Booneys. An outstanding guide to the trails. Extremely accurate., August 21, 1998 Reviewer: A reader We just used this book as a primary source on a recent trip to Southern Alaska. The book's description of hikes was extremely accurate and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the very accurate directions to trailheads and the elevation profiles, which gave a good sense of the hikes' difficulty. The book's focus on issues such as the clarity of trail markings and the variation in the hike experience during different times of the year gave the book extra value.

Great details and it even tells you how long of a hike each one is (short day, long day, 2 day, etc.).

We only did 3 hikes in this book, but plan on using it when we return to Alaska...hopefully in the next year!

The descriptions of the hikes make it easy to plan ahead for the type of gear you're going to want to bring.

This is a great book with a great mix of hikes throughout the state. There is good balance of short and long as well as easy and more challenging hikes. It does not try to be exhaustive in its coverage, but gives you enough ideas to occupy your time in any area of the state. It should be useful to either a once in a lifetime tourists or a resident who has an opportunity to hike the different regions of the state.

This was a great book in its first edition, this second edition takes a good design and makes it near perfect. The hike maps are superb, most hikes have elevation profiles, great reviews as well as all the important info you could need - distances, fees, maps, difficulty ratings...

I've read a lot of Alaska hiking books and this one stands out as a state-wide guide for finding hikes to take. It is not the strongest guide to equipment or technique. But if you want a book to give you great suggestions for hikes, pick this one up.

My boyfriend and I purchased this book before our trip to Alaska and it was great. It provided very specific directions to various hikes and accurate descriptions as to the conditions of each trail and their overall difficulty. We only did 3 hikes in this book, but plan on using it when we return to Alaska...hopefully in the next year! The waterproof cover is an added bonus.

Note: The book does NOT cover Denali, other than the few trails around the national park entrance.

My family has been to Alska 5 times, each time for 2 weeks. There is no shortage of outdoor activities, and likewise, a seemingly endless stream of books/guides/brochures/pamphlets to help you navigate through all the options. However, many of these publications are either way too general (for the cruise ship folks??) or way too specific (for the serious backcountry backpacker). Finding guides that provide great information for the more typical "weekend warrior" types is pretty rare. I found this on Amazon before taking our latest trip in July 2011. From the sample pages, it seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. It did not disappoint. After using it for 2 weeks, I lent it to 2 other families who visited Alaska last summer. They both agreed that it was extremely helpful.

A note of advice, especially to those visiting Alaska for the first time. Get this book and the almost indispensible Milepost. If you're visiting several areas of the state, Milepost will literally take you, mile by mile, to where you are going. Alaska has a ton of hidden treasures that you can easily drive right past without a guide to point them out. Milepost doesn't miss a thing! Order these 2 books. You'll be glad you did.

I've been using this book to plan out hikes for the last 4 years. I've done about 19 of the hikes listed inside. The hikes are listed according to the geographic region of the state, which will be handy for many readers, the majority of hikes centering around the popular southern region of Alaska. (Anchorage, Kenai, Girdwood, Seward, etc) Very accurate parking and driving directions.

I've found the descriptions of the hikes to be fairly accurate and helpful. The descriptions of the hikes make it easy to plan ahead for the type of gear you're going to want to bring. I'd say the book is a mixture of difficult, hard to reach hikes, like the couple you have to take a water taxi out of Homer to get to, to hikes that are very accessible and close to the road.

It lists many key features and landmarks of each hike by mile, very helpful for those not using a GPS.

I live in Alaska, and I have almost every book about hiking throughout the state, and I've found that this guide is my favorite and having the best variety compared to the rest.

Definitely worth purchasing for locals or those visiting the state. If you're JUST going to be visiting the interior, there is another great book which has far more in depth and is MUCH more comprehensive called "Outside in the Interior" by Kyle Jolly. I recommend that one if you're going to be spending a lot more time in the interior of Alaska. The "Hiking Alaska" book does however have a few good hikes if you're just going to be in the interior for a few days. But if you're going to be visiting the Anchorage area, you'll find a TON of hikes in this "Hiking Alaska" book and most of them are within a reasonable driving distance.

We are moving back to Alaska and I can't wait to take the kids for a hike. There are so~ many great hikes for EVERYONE of all levels to enjoy. Great details and it even tells you how long of a hike each one is (short day, long day, 2 day, etc.). I bought this as a gift for my husband and he loved it.
Highly recommended!!!
