Hiking the Appalachian Trail 2-Vol. Set, October 6, 2010
This review is from: Hiking the Appalachian Trail (2 volume set) (Hardcover)
Compiled in the mid-1970s, this hardcover two-volume set was in very good condition, minus a dust jacket, but what matter? The set contains the personal, often day-by-day accounts of many "end to enders." It is a fascinating read for any backpacker and well worth reading for anyone thinking of doing long-distance hiking. The accounts vary, of course, but there seemed to be a few constants. Anyone considering hiking the A.T. needs to be prepared for many rainy days and days when overcast skies hide good views. One also needs to be prepared to NOT be able to stay at shelters every night. And apparently one should expect to find oneself in low spirits some of the time.
All the hikers had to replenish their food supplies in one way or another, and often have equipment repaired or replaced as well. Without exception all were glad for reprieves en route, such as a restaurant meal, a friendly person who took them in for a night and fed them, and laundry facilities. Most of the hikers preferred to hike alone at their own pace, but were glad for occasional company. Some hikers really put on the miles, but whether among the slow or the fast. almost all were very time-conscious: Would I make it to the next food supply point? Would I complete the trail before time ran out? The latter especially struck me as ironic. I was struck by the honesty of those who reported on their trips. They told about their qualms and discouragements as well as their achievements. All the accounts were very well written (or edited).
The book is a very, very interesting compilation and the PERFECT way to enjoy the Trail vicariously! I recommend it highly.

This review is from: Hiking the Appalachian Trail (2 volume set) (Hardcover)
This is a great book, lots of great photographs. The accounts of hiking the Appalachian are very interesting. I especially enjoyed the story of Eric Ryback. A lot of useful and practical information is contained in this book.
