This book is a treasure! The author has found many of the hidden gems of forest and trails in and around Atlanta. Even as a local, he found places I did not know existed. There are trails and places in-town that look like they are miles out in woods. Each location is well detailed, including maps and directions. It should be required for all Urban Atlanta dwellers who are looking for green space, casual hikes, and bike rides. I only hope that many of these places remain "hidden" and not discovered by too many people ...

I really like this book. I'm a relatively experienced hiker. Before reading this I hiked mostly on trails a long drive from Atlanta. The few trails that I knew that are close to the city were becoming boring to me. Hiking Atlanta's Hidden Forests introduced me to some really good new trails that are close to the city. The descriptions are helpful and I like that he points out notable trees. I also like that the author describes the trail and its details well enough to choose a hike. He provides suggested routes (some of the trails are more like trail systems) with directions that are not always easy to follow, but I don't mind exploring so sometimes I make my own route. The only gripe I have with the book is the order of the trails. It jumps back and forth between neighborhoods. For example there are several trails in Decatur in a row, then some in a different neighborhood, and then more back in Decatur.

This is the single best, most useful Atlanta-specific book I own. It offers detailed descriptions of dozens and dozens of wonderful hikes, all within a short drive of the city, including pictures, directions for transt and driving, and GPS coordinates for parking, My husband and I have lived in Atlanta all our lives, but dozens of the hikes in the book were brand new to us, including the amazing Constitution Lakes trail just a couple miles from our house. Others we knew about or had hiked before, but felt like brand new experiences with the benefit of the book's information on the unique trees and wildlife that can be found along the way. Just this weekend we went to South Peachtree Creek Trail and Atlanta Memorial Park, and we are eagerly looking forward to the next weekend on which we will have a few hours to spare. This book has made a real positive impact on our lives.

Thanks very much for putting this together! Just finished up my fifth hike in the book!

I love that some of these hikes can be finished after work on a weekday if you need a nice stroll somewhere in Atlanta! I had no idea that there were so many places to get into a good hike this close to the city!

This is the best book I've read about outdoor life in Atlanta. There are so many hidden gems, that I'm a little worried my newly found favorites will be discovered by other people through this book.

So don't buy this book!

Nah, I'm joking. Buy it now!

We have owned this book for a couple of weeks but have lived in Georgia for 20 years and been hiking all over the area seriously for about 10 years. We found several hikes already we did not know about. Plenty of material to work through!

Mr. McDonald does an awesome job including as many details as possible about the trails! We have hiked 3 or 4 so far and love the details about trees etc! Lovely trails that we had no idea were so close to home!

If you live in or are visiting Atlanta and want to know where some great green spaces are, check out this book! I've been amazed that I don't have to travel far to enjoy beautiful landscapes and lovely forests.

Jonah's hikes are well-thought out, and are greatly varied across difficulty, length, and terrain.

This book is accessible to novices, with great hikes that are easy to get to from the city and easy to follow. Experienced hikers will find challenging hikes in here as well. Plus a lot of them don't require a car to access - marta instructions included!

I have an intermediate amount of hiking experience - and like to do day hikes over big hiking trips. For me, this book has provided a lot of options for easy to get to hikes from where I live in the city. I am amazed that, in twenty minutes, I can get great relief from city life in green spaces that are amazing. Our city is full of these hidden gems.

I've really enjoyed the hikes I've done so far - the landscapes have all been interesting and varied. I've seen deer, hidden creeks, meadows, and graffiti-covered buildings. Plus all the hikes highlight cool trees to check out along the way.
