The authors define hiking as an extended walk and backpacking as an overnight hike with supplies. Using the expertise gathered as veteran hikers, Seaborg, president of the American Hiking Society, and Dudley provide an enthusiastic, even evangelistic, introduction to--and overview of--this increasingly popular pastime. Comfortable feet are crucial to either hiking or backpacking, and that's where the authors start. Though they allow that any comfortable pair of shoes will do for beginners, they contend that eventually all hikers should invest in boots that provide critical ankle support. They also discuss packs, food, map reading, compass use, and the importance of leaving nature in at least the same shape one found it, preferably better. A third of the text is devoted to a listing of the best worldwide hiking and backpacking trails and information on who to contact for information regarding them. A glossary of hiking terminology and an appendix of organizations, magazines, and other literature round out this well-organized, concise, and informative handbook.
