Editorial Reviews

Review

Any avid Portland hiker would be happy to plunk down $18.95, toss the tote-friendly book into a day pack and hit the books 100 trails. ---The Oregonian

Truly comprehensive. It offers 22 hikes in and around the Portland/Vancouver metro areas, several in the Silver Star Scenic Area and Trapper Creek Wilderness, and follows the Gorge for its entire journey along the Oregon - Washington border, incorporating a few fine trails east of The Dalles as well. ---Washington Trails Association

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Resource by Craig Romano August 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
I wasn't terribly surprised to find that this book was just as much of a gem as the other books Mr. Romano has written. With great tidbits about the history of the area as well as detailed directions both for driving and for navigating the trails, this is a perfect pocket guide to explore the Columbia River Gorge. Don't let the phrase 'pocket guide' be misleading- this smaller-than-usual book is packed tight with plenty of information. I look forward to continuing to explore this region with my hiking group (PNW Leisure Hiking) using Mr. Romano's awesome guide. My favorite part of this book is the "Hikes at a Glance" table in the front that sums up each hike- that's been incredibly helpful in planning. I also love the list of "bonus hikes" in the back- talk about getting more out of a book! And since our hiking group is dog-friendly, it's fabulous to have the information at our fingertips as to which hikes are dog friendly and which are not. All in all, a must-have addition to any hiker's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide to Columbia Gorge trails July 11, 2011
Format:Paperback
Having written a guide for photographers that included the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, and working on one for Washington, I thought I knew the area pretty well. Craig's "Day Hikes Columbia River Gorge" includes several trails I didn't know about previously, and made me want to go explore some more. Thorough coverage, easy to follow directions and plenty of reasons to get out and hit the trails.

5.0 out of 5 stars great local hiking book August 22, 2011

This book was great. It includes a lot of information about hikes in the area. I like how it rates the difficulty and how there is a list at the front of the book that quickly shows some of the important information about the hikes.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought this as soon as it was available July 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
New trails keep appearing in the Columbia Gorge, so it's about time someone wrote a book describing them all. This book is essential for hikers in the Pacific Northwest looking for all-season trails. About half the trails in this book are described in no other book. There are even a number of trails along I-5 in the Vancouver, WA area for those times you need a leg-stretcher during a long drive. This is the first trail guide to Washington trails I have purchased since the excellent but out-of-print Spring and Manning series. Craig Romano is the best candidate so far to claim their mantle as the ultimate Washington trails guidebook author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide book! June 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
This gem of a book is a must-have for anyone in the Portland/Vancouver area who likes to hike. There are 50 hikes on the Oregon side of the Gorge and 50 on the often-overlooked Washington side. Some of the trails are well-known and others are intriguing hikes in places covered by no other guide book. The information is complete, accurate, and fascinating to read. The author discusses the history, geology, plants, and animals in the area as well as the hikes themselves. When you read this informative and entertaining book, it will make you want to do all the hikes ASAP. This is a top-notch hiking guidebook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great guide from Romano! June 30, 2011
Format:Paperback
Craig Romano hits it out of the park again with Day Hiking Columbia Gorge. I come back to his books time and time again because he uses exactly the right amount of his own voice in his write-ups. Extremely accurate, and covering lots of ground, Day Hiking Columbia Gorge will take you where you want to go... whether it's popular hikes like Dog Mountain or Multnohmah Falls, or to escape the crowds at Augspurger Mountain. You can't go wrong with this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars We All Do It April 24, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
We drive past in a heated flurry and wonder what that hike or that trail or that park would be like to explore. And then we reconsider because we aren't sure what to expect or if we have the right gear. A lovely book to help guide your path and to use for planning fun side trips, day outings and overnight explorations.
