5.0 out of 5 stars Hiking in NEPa, January 23, 2011

Let's start off by saying Jeff is an extremely helpful guy when it comes to asking about information on creeks and hikes in Nepa. The new edition of his book for hiking in the Endless Mountains has more detail, not only in GPS coords, but also in some color pictures, as well as new hikes too. If you live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and you like to do more than sit on your couch, this is an excellent read to show the beauty that most Pennsylvanians don't even know exists in their own backyards.

So c'mon, buy a copy, get out and explore the natural beauty that most people take from granted. You won't be disappointed with all that there is to see and do in this book. My personal favorite area is SGL #13, lots of great scenery and waterfalls. I've been hiking those runs for years and always find something new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Info. on the Endless Mountains, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Hiking the Endless Mountains: Exploring the Wilderness of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Paperback)
The book is well written and provides good information for the hiker enthusiast. However, better maps, possibly topographic type from quads. and photographs, that would entice the hiker, would make this a five star book. It's good to see a book written about this area of Pennsylvania, which is truley a hidden treasure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Opened up the whole Endless Mtns area to us!, November 11, 2008

After buying a house in the endless mountains area, my husband and I wanted to explore. We got lucky with this book--as it has completely "MADE" our enjoyment of the vast area. We would have never found most of the parks--and then especially the trails in them. We're still using this book after 3+ years--and have since given it as gifts to area residents who never knew about all the great hikes this book leads you to. I also like the overview map in it, which shows where all the hikes are on one map.

Jeff Mitchell is an excellent writer and all of his books are great guides for hiking and paddling Pennsylvania. I've gone on a few of the hikes in this book, and I've found his maps to be pretty accurate, along with his driving directions. His hike descriptions point out key features of the hike, such as vistas, plants, wildlife, and waterfalls, and there are several hikes in the book that go way off the beaten path and into the true wilds of Pennsylvania. Mitchell also gives a great introduction to hiking in Pennsylvania and lists several resources to find more information about hiking in Pennsylvania.

The only drawback is that some of the information in outdated, as some trailheads have been removed and some trails have faded blazes that make it difficult to follow the trail, and some trails have simply just fallen into disrepair and need a kind soul to help with the upkeep. However, this isn't Mitchell's fault, and you can still go for a good hike on those rough trails.
