Book Description

November 1987
The Paria River begins at Bryce Canyon National Park and nearby high plateaus, and flows almost due south across the Utah-Arizona state line ending at the Colorado River and Lee's Ferry. After the Grand Canyon, Zion Narrows and the Escalante River system, this river basin has more visitors than any other canyon drainage on the Colorado Plateau. If you like narrow canyons, including the single best slot canyon in the world (the Buckskin Gulch), this is the place for you. You can take day-hikes in some of the shorter tributaries, or go on a week-long marathon walk in the lower end of the Paria Canyon. The northern half of the area covered by this book is now included in the western part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

4.0 out of 5 stars The value is in the details, November 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hiking and Exploring the Paria River (Paperback)
I bought this book to plan my Paria Canyon hike. The detail is astonishing- mileages, detailed maps and where to find water complete with historical information and photos. Every gooseneck and crack is described as well as the geology. The only demerits the author gets are: choosing a poor print font that is difficult to read. Mileages are in kilometers - an annoying mystery as he is a Utah native and the maps are somewhat confusing. I will submit a revised review AFTER my hike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Feet to Meters, October 29, 2008
This review is from: Hiking and Exploring the Paria River (Paperback)
The book offers very good information and facts for your hike. It is a very dry reading and the author would never be considered a humorist. It provided very good information on where to camp, sites to see, where the water is and maps. The maps were not very good and it is a good idea to get a BLM map for your hike. The BLM map that can be purchased at the trailhead station and provides most of the info you need for your hike. The annoying and confusing thing about the book is the author refers to distance in meters. So if you are an American hiker and you are depending on the distances to find LIFE GIVING WATER for example you better have an idea how far 1000 meters is. He must have gone to school in the 60's(like I did) and some science teach told him (as they told me) that America will have to convert to the metric system soon (the 60's) and guess what, except for the beverage companies going metric to sell us less product for more money it didn't happen. Because of this I would get an advanced BLM map in feet and study it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, very difficult to read, May 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Highly informative and detailed book, but the font type makes the book difficult to read and unpleasing to the eye - seems like a minor point, but extremely annoying and user unfriendly. I heard some BLM Rangers commenting on how this author makes it seem too easy/benign to get to some of these places (i.e. you can get yourself into trouble). Author also displays a lot of personal comments about BLM management (I read through it, but some may find annoying).
Detailed maps, but took a long time to figure out how to interpret them (even with the map key) -- had to cross reference other maps to figure out "where" the book's hand drawn maps were located on a "real" road map.
This book is better used as a second, more detailed book (use it as additional information to look up once you've used another book to pick out where you want to go).
