Book Description

Falcon Guides Hiking April 1996
Georgia beckons hikers with nearly 1,000 miles of trails that tunnel through flowering rhododendron thickets, follow wild streams of the northern mountains, crisscross historic parks in rolling foothills, and wind among towering pines of the coastal plain. Hiking Georgia, formerly The Hiker's Guide to Georgia, the only guide to the entire state, covers well-known areas but also introduces hikers to some relatively undiscovered places. Hiking Georgia, by Donald W. Pfitzer, naturalist and former assistant regional director for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Southeast Region, describes more than 100 trails that vary in length and difficulty. Choose from an easy one-hour stroll along a quiet nature trail, a trek along 80 miles of the Appalachian Trail, or a medium distance that suits you. The book contains accurate, up-to-date information, detailed maps, and black-and-white photos that depict the landscape of the Peach State's backcountry: the come-hither curve of an insectivorous swamp plant, rivers and waterfalls, cannons resting permanently on historic battlefields. It also includes tips on hiking with children and backcountry safety and ethics. Whether you're looking for a long backpacking adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains or an easy family hike within minutes of downtown Atlanta, Hiking Georgia is an essential source to Georgia's beautiful parklands and backcountry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reading!, January 11, 1998
This review is from: Hiking Georgia (Falcon Guides Hiking) (Paperback)
The trail reviews are pretty comprehensive and informative, and quite interesting. Trails are rated for difficulty on a simple easy-moderate-strenuous scale, and the reviews are obviously written from a first-hand observer's view. I heartily recommend it to a casual hiker like myself, and it seems that there is useful information for experienced hikers as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good resource, but take a map, May 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Hiking Georgia, 2nd (Paperback)
This book has a comprehensive list of hiking trails in Georgia, and has good descriptions. My only caution would be to reference a map when driving to the trailhead. I followed the directions in the book on a recent hike and got lost, later to find the directions included at least one typo and were either out of date (Highway numbers changed) or just wrong.

There is a 2006 3rd edition available from Amazon which does not get linked here for some reason. I am buying that to replace the first edition which we have used for many years. Hikes are sorted by area, well described and rated for difficulty.
