Best hiking book for Deerfield Valley, February 25, 2008
This review is from: Hiking Green Mountain National Forest: Southern Section (Paperback)
There are a lot of books with hiking routes in "southern Vermont," but most of them only include one or two common hikes in the vast hikers' paradise of the Deerfield Valley. Scofield's book includes several hiking routes in the Deerfield Valley, such as Somerset and Harriman reservoirs, Haystack, Mount Olga, Mount Snow, and others. Also included are several hikes in nearby areas - George Aiken Wilderness area, Glastenbury Mountain, Lye Brook Wilderness area, and Grout Pond. Routes in the Bennington and Brattleboro areas are also featured. While some sections of Long Trail are included, Scofield doesn't waste too much time covering ground (pardont the pun) that so many others have also covered before.
Scofield's trail descriptions, as well as his directions to trail heads, are excellent, but what makes this book better than most is the historical information he supplies. Scofield's insight gives hikers a real understanding of the history of human activity that has shaped the landscape in what is now the Green Mountain National Forest.
