Editorial Reviews

Review

In addition to providing essential trail logistics for each day hike, this book is a trail compendium that deftly assimilates into each description aspects regarding geology, geography, natural areas, flora, fauna, and human history, not excluding the region's literary and cinematic heritage. It's a guide for the twenty-first century adventurer. --George Ellison, author of Blue Ridge Nature Journal

Introduces you to the best of western North Carolina's spectacular hiking trails, and gives you something extra: an inside look at the heritage behind the trails that even long-time residents and experienced hikers may not know. With Danny's book, your hike will be more than just a walk in the woods--you'll develop an even greater appreciation for these wonderful mountains. --Penn Dameron, Executive Director, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area

More About the Author

My mission is to get people out of their cars and hiking.

My latest book is the Mountains-to-Sea Trail Across North Carolina: Walking a Thousand Miles through Wildness, Culture and History.

I've been a committed hiker for over 40 years, completing the Appalachian Trail, all the trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the South beyond 6000, many other hiking challenges, and, of course, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. I maintain sections of the MST and the A.T. Trails don't maintain themselves, so people have to do it.

I've written two hiking guides, Hiking the Carolina Mountains (2007) and Hiking North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains (2009) published by Milestone Press and blogs at www.hikertohiker.com.

My motto is "No place is too far to walk if you have the time." I plan to die with my boots on.

Hiking guides are supposed to tell you how to find and hike trails, and Hiking North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains does this in an easy to read, authoritative manner for 66 hikes. Its maps, trail directions and driving instructions are excellent. However, few hiking guides tell you anything the human and natural history of the areas you are hiking through. This is where Hiking North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains provides extra value. Each hike has a section that tells you something interesting about the land you're hiking on, whether it's its moonshiner past or how the land came to be available for hiking. The book also has detailed information on some smaller North Carolina parks that is not available in any other guide I've seen. These parks may only have one or two hikes, but they are gems not to be missed. I thought I knew Western North Carolina, but this book has expanded my hiking horizons.

Ms. Bernstein's second book is much more than the hiking guidebook I expected. Rather than flipping through and perusing the maps, I found myself reading the book in its entirety from front to back, absorbing the histories of each area and the highlighted heritage segments. Even the most seasoned hiker of the Blue Ridge Heritage area will learn something new. I studied the descriptions for hikes that I have done in the past and the information is extremely accurate. Hike descriptions for routes I have not yet traveled are easy to follow and understand. Most unexpected, however, are the "drive" descriptions where the author tells you to set your odometer and takes you on an excursion through the area, noting shorter hikes, overlooks, visitor centers and other attractions of interest. And to further pursue in-depth your interest in the Blue Ridge Heritage Area, she has included in her appendices a list of related books and movies with summaries of each and the hike or area to which it pertains. This is a must-have guide for hikers and explorers of all levels in the North Carolina Mountains.

Not really a well written book imo.
A bit convoluted and there are not as many trails as I suspected there would be.
A bit of a disappointment.
