1.0 out of 5 stars Very difficult book to understand and figure mileage. Hate it., October 27, 2009

This review is from: Hiking Oregon's Eagle Cap Wilderness, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series) (Paperback)
I should have previewed the book better. This is the worst trail book I have of my 15 book collection. When you see a great destination, you have to thumb thru the book to work backwards toward finding which trail goes to which trailhead and add up each subsequent trail to figure out the trips mileage. Never seen a book like this and will never purchase one like it again. Too much work to use it. Terrible.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Guide for the Eagle Cap Wilderness, September 15, 2010
This review is from: Hiking Oregon's Eagle Cap Wilderness, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series) (Paperback)
The reviewer who gave this book one star does have a point. The hikes that are described don't necessarily start at the trailhead. Sometimes (too often), the hikes start at a trail intersection miles from the nearest trailhead. When the author does this, it's because it's usually the best direction to do the hike. The book works best for those who are doing high mileage or multi-day hikes in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area and are stringing a number of the described hikes together into a longer trip. Nonetheless, there is no other book that provides the same comprehensive coverage of the beautiful Eagle Cap Wilderness. I live a couple hours from the Eagle Cap Wilderness and hike it often. This book is indispensable for those who want to explore the Eagle Cap Wilderness in detail. Casual day hikers may not need the detail this book provides, but it is a necessity for those who want to visit the Eagle Cap Wilderness more than once or who want to get deep into the backcountry.
