This is a great book for anyone wanting to take hikes to see representative geology and to read a geological description of what they're seeing. The author details ninety hikes, mostly day hikes, in all corners of the state. The 'trailhead' directions are clear and easy to follow as are the descriptions of the trails. The book opens with an excellent 14 page introduction to Oregon's geological history and a nice appendix on indentifying rocks minerals. Dr. Bishop also wrote the 'In search of ancient Oregon', an outstanding overview of the states geological history.

This is a very well written and photographed book on hiking some of Oregons superb
Geology. The western part of Oregon is greatly covered by forest so it is hard to see differentiation between strata and formations. In Eastern Oregon it is hotter, a lot less rain, and clear views of the geology.
You will fall in love with Oregon if you buy this book.

For those who loved Ellen Morris Bishop's outstanding and beautifully photographed "In Search of Ancient Oregon", this is a great companion book to take on the road and get physically engaged in the geology that surrounds us. The extra value is a tip on outstanding hiking areas of beauty - and, thanks to this book, a look at geology that you might miss otherwise. Highly recommended. See the world and great wild areas.
