5.0 out of 5 stars The Lowe's love of the Oregon wilderness shines, August 14, 2011
This review is from: Sixty Hiking Trails Central Oregon Cascades (Paperback)
My Dad purchased this book in the late 1970's to plan backpacking trips for my Dad, my younger brother, and me. As a young teenager, I hiked several of the Lowe-described hikes-most memorable was the Eight Lakes Basin loop (No. 21). After a 30-year hiatus from backpacking, I've recently taken up the pursuit again with my 13-year old son. I looked for more current backpacking guides to plan my son's and my first trip, but despite the glossy color pictures of many of these guides, they didn't hold a candle to the enthusiastic Lowe narrative accompanied by the distinct greyscale clips of 7.5 minute USGS quad map with the routes superimposed in red, and the Lowe's black and white photography. I also love the small-scale key maps at the beginning of the book showing the relative location of all of the numbered hikes. You will probably want to review more detailed maps once you select a hike, but selecting a hike is half the battle for me as the time that I can devote to the sport is precious. The Lowe's guide assists greatly in selecting a hike that meets my desired criteria. My son and I did the South Breitenbush Trail (No. 7) last August and it surpassed our expectations making for some great memories. This book is an Oregon classic for backpackers.
