Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book samples the landscape and history of the entire state, and is well organized, well researched, and well written. Its pages add a new dimension to hikes by linking our footfalls with those of the past." -Ruth Kirk

From the Inside Flap

Hiking Washington's History is for hikers, as well as amateur historians, newcomers unfamiliar with the state's history, and Northwest natives who know only part of that history. Savor the vicarious experience of a hike from a cozy chair on a rainy winter day or put your boots on and hit the trail when the sun shines.

While I enjoyed the thorough historical information that accompanied each hike, I found the hike descriptions to be less thorough than other hiking guides. I also feel like a key statistic - elevation gain/loss - was not present in most entries and should have been listed in the initial bullet point overview at the beginning of each hike description. As anyone who hikes with small children, bad knees, or grandparents along knows, the elevation of a hike can make all the difference between a great day out with the family and a grueling slog.

Compared to this book's counterpart, Hiking through History Washington: Exploring the Evergreen State's Past by Trail, this book actually realizes there's history throughout the state not just in one section.

Ms. Bentley writes as though there's actually knowledge involved in her research. Forty-two hikes throughout nine regions, about 4 or 5 hikes per region are listed in this book. A LOT of great information is added including comments and information from homesteaders and early frontiersmen.

This book is a SERIOUS bonus to any hiker in the state interested in our history. Bravo, Ms. Bentley, BRAVO!

Judy Bentley clearly spent an immense amount of time researching this book. She then took all of that research and built it into a strong narrative for each trail. Each trail description is wrapped around history. Don't expect fancy trail maps or detailed GPS descriptions. Most of her trails are easily followed anyway. This is trail history like no other book.

A typical example is her description of the Lake Ozette, Cape Alava trail on the Olympic Peninsula. This six page narrative gives the historical context, the meanings of names, the stories for both the Native Americans and the European settlers, and key points along the way. Easy and compelling to read, you get a feel for this fantastic place. Like most hikes, there is a nice photo to help with the context. It is easy to read and is in no way "text booky".

All of the hike descriptions follow this pattern. Background, descriptions of various stories, historical photographs, and points of interest along the way. Having done some local trail history research, I am blown away by the depth Judy Bentley must have gone to with her research. The hike descriptions are interesting enough to be read even if you do not plan to do that particular hike.

Hiking Washington's History belongs on the bookshelf of every serious hiker and history enthusiast.
