Previously I have used cheaper foscam cameras which do not have H.264 format. The webcam viewer applications that we were using for live view on iPhone and Android which handled the cheaper foscam cameras did not work with this camera due to its H.264 format, so we had to find an app that worked. We found that "IP Cam Viewer Lite" is free and works fine with this camera. The paid version of the app gets rid of the adds and I think gives more features, but I haven't tried that yet (I probably will). I read a little about the format difference, and it sounds like the H.264 format saves on network bandwidth, which is important since this is 3 megapixel camera. I think that the higher resolution of this camera is worth the price differential over the 640x480 cameras. My husband disagrees, and argues that since we normally view the cameras from our phones - which have such small screens - the lower resolution images look about as good.

As with all web cameras you need to know a little about IP addresses and setting up your router to allow you to access the camera from outside your local network. Basically you set the camera to use a static IP address within your network, and then you go to your router's setup pages and set up port-forwarding. When you do this, be sure to set up your router to forward the camera's HTTP port and its RTSP Port to the camera. (The "IP Cam Viewer Lite" makes use of the RTSP port.)

I have the similar bullet version (DS-2CD2032-I) out in my front yard where there is other nighttime lighting, and I LOVE it. This one, however, isn't working nearly as well. I don't think the picture is as clear, and the IR lights up bugs so bright that they are constantly triggering the motion recording. As in about once a minute during the night, taking up a lot of recording space. Right now there is no way to turn-off the built-in IR and use external IR, but I think it is coming in a firmware update. BTW, hard to find the firmware - another reason I can't rate this too high...

I own several different types of IP cameras from different manufacturers and differing prices that I paid for to supposedly get quality but this one right out of the box had the best picture and the most options to configure it compared to the other name brand cams I have.

It has a really crisp, sharp picture during the day and night as well as excellent automatic switching of the IR sensor when the light gets low.

The IR LEDs inside the dome gave me pause because another camera I have is the same way and the reflection of the IR LEDs inside the camera causes a 'glare' inside the dome but not with this one.

The number of features that you can configure will have you playing for days if you want to know what they all do but with the default setup the camera works excellent if you so not want to mess with those settings.

PROS:
Out of the box excellent picture quality with no calibration
Best and quickest IR transition of all my IP cams from day to night or when a light comes on at night
Tons of configuration options if you want but great without any tweaking
POE works great on about a 150' run
Nice small connections to fit though a small hole if drilling through a wall
Has support for viewing in a browser using webcomponents, QuickTime, VLC, and MJPEG

CONS:
Can't change the default 'admin' user name or add a user with all the permissions that 'admin' has
A little hard to get it aligned to point where you want without a laptop or tablet or mobile app

Overall a fantastic outdoor IP POE camera for the money and better than some I spent more on that I highly recommend. I even bought another to cover another spot.

Here is some software from HikVision that will help setup and tweak the camera http://goo.gl/VQdxtI.

Installed three of these out front and behind my home, covering driveway, door, and alley. Well worth the price. Paired them w/ a PoE switch and Nelly's Eyesurv ION Series ESDV-NVRION-8 8 Channel 1080p Hi Def Mini NVR.

Picture quality is excellent, night vision works well, and the ONVIF compatibility makes this thing really versatile as to the recording/NVR/backend system options.

Interface is surprisingly robust and non-ActiveX dependent! This in and of itself is a huge benefit in that you can use Chrome, Safari, or another non-IE browser to do everything from config to monitoring from afar. One annoying thing is the initial setup IP address. The Hikvision cameras come hardcoded w/ an off the wall/non-standard IP address (not 192.168/10.0) that means having to config a machine manually into the same scheme/subnet to then reassign and work on most existing networks.

Beware of non-US versions/software. These aren't normally sold to the public and instead go through resellers and vendor/installers. Many you find online (and on Amazon) are meant for the Chinese market and have firmware as such. This isn't usually a problem, but can result in difficulty finding new/updating firmware and Simplified Chinese characters for dates and other display items. These can be swapped to English, but the underlying system remains meant for and set to non-US/meant for mainland China firmware. There is a fellow in some of the forums who has a solution to this and can config the units to accept US/English language firmware, but charges a fee.

Regardless of these minor detractors, I highly recommend these cameras and will be using them again for future installs.
