Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Stand-up comedy has mostly migrated to video, but these four-tape collections of recently released single albums provide good value if a more limited experience. The Comedians of the Year includes four winners of the American Comedy Awards. The stand-out is Richard Jeni, who deploys deft wit and dead-on voices and characters to produce his "greatest bits." The raunchy, presober Margaret Cho riffs irreverently on herself and Asian American identity, adding raucous impersonations of her mother and other Asian immigrants. By contrast, John Pinette's impressions of Asians seem tired, and his "show me the buffet" shtick would work better if audiences could see his impressive girth. Brian Regan offers tamer but well-executed observational comedy. For public libraries that collect comedy. In Hilarith: The Best of Lesbian Humor, Kate Clinton manages a sly mix of lesbian references and topical humor ("Linda Tripp is an insult to drag queens everywhere"). Also excellent is Marga Gomez, who skewers pretentiousness with apt impressions. Suzanne Westenhoefer and Karen Williams connect with their audiences but sound more hit-and-miss on tape. Similarly, The Best of Latino Humor--featuring Pablo Francisco, Rudy Moreno, and the Spicy Hot Mamitas (not a group but five female stand-ups)--captures hot performances that drag a bit on audio. Still, both sets should appeal to libraries serving lesbian and Latino (especially Chicano) demographics.

From the Back Cover

Suzanne Westenhoefer is a comic whose timing and personality have made her one of the most exciting faces on the comedic scene today; she is a standout, a natural. You might say, any performer as out front as Suzanne is certain to be on the front line of controversy.

Marga Gomez describes herself as Half Latina, half lesbian. Passionate, political, and a little hairy, she is the Frida Kahlo of Comedy. I dont care if youre gay or straight, what matters is if youre a top or a bottom.

Karen Williams is the funniest woman on the comedy stage today. San Francisco Bay Times. Known as the Diva of Comedy, Karen Williams is recognized as a comedy craftmaster. She is a regularly featured humorist/lecturer at colleges and universities throughout the country.

Kate Clinton is Americas premiere Fumeristthats shorthand for feminist and humorist. There are no skeletons in this Clintons closet. A consummate family entertainer, Kate continues to prove that this year, and every year, is the year of the really funny woman.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suzanne Westenhoefer was great!!, March 5, 2007
This review is from: Hilarith: The Best of Lesbian Humor (Audio Cassette)
I bought this tape as a way to introduce myself to some other possibly intersting/funny lesbian commedians. Until now I'd only heard Suzzane Westenhoefer's "I ain't Cindy Brady" (Excellent!!) and Ellen D.
The other 3 commedians were alright, but not something I'm going to want to listen to again and again. Some of it was a bit too American specific and so I just didn't get it; some of it was just not that funny. Suzanne Westenhoefer though was excellent. It was worth buying this just for her.
