Editorial Reviews

Hildegard of Bingen was one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages--an Abbess and woman of God, a visionary, naturalist, playwright, political moralist, and composer. Despite this outpouring of religious creativity, her visions were called into question and she was put on trial by the Church in 1148. An inspiring story of faith, courage and compassion.

Customer Reviews

Was a little slow and hard to understand.
Crissy
Visions were represented with an odd viewing approach; no real expected depth to the story; and left me wondering.
tsirme
It is for everyone, regardless of the religion one belongs to.

I have loved every movie and tv and sketch that has had Patricia Routledge in it. She is one of the most talented actresses ever...
The movie Hildegard was a little confusing to me because I had never heard the history of the storyline before, and I think the makers of the film left out a lot of information that they probably assumed people would already know (I know they always have to have some things end up on the cutting room floor, but it seemed there were large gaps in the story that just didn't make sense)...
Overall, it was well made, but I suggest reading the full story of Hildegard before watching this movie. Otherwise, you might be "lost" as I was in some scenes...

The kindest comment I can make about this movie is that it is an introduction into the life of Hildegard of Bingen. I'm assuming that they did not want to get into specifics about the controversies of her visions. Do you really think that she was threatened with excommunication over an argument about a novice?
If this story piqued your interest into the life of Hildegard, I implore you to read an unedited biography - not published by the church - of her amazing life and visions. There are editions that include her own sketches of her visions, which will make it easier for you to understand why she and her intercessors needed to describe her spiritual love for God, taking the form of human love...
I'm just confusing the issue. Hildegard was a true visionary who's only weakness was that she was human - if that is really a weakness. I urge you to read more about this Saintly Woman.

Having read a great deal about this fascinating Saint and mystic, I only wish there was more in the movie. She is a loveable character with many good stories who deserves more time on the screen.

Did I just fall in love with her music? It was moving to hear those angelic voices.

The actress played Hildegard's part well and the narrating was splendidly done.

Her many visions were mentioned; but, they they weren't discussed in detail.

The nuns she lived with weren't allowed to chant some of their prayers.

Hildegard ended up founding her own convent, by God's grace.

I don't know a lot about Hildegard, so I'm uncertain if everything is historically accurate.

I did enjoy the film, but historical inaccuracies annoy me. The worst was the Abbot wearing Franciscan garb when that order did not yet exist. The church had no resemblance to a Catholic chapel and it gave the impression that the Office sung by the nuns was exclusively St Hildegards' compositions, rather than the psalter.
All that being said I was glad to see it was offered. She was a very interesting and influential woman. I think she would be horrified to hear herself described as a feminist or heretic, though modernists love to claim her to be so.
A fabulous movie could be made of her life. How many have had the privilege to experience the universe without ever leaving home.

I had read a biography of St Hildegard, and was impressed with her dignity and holiness. She composed many songs of the Church, centuries ago. This film paid great homage to her. See it. It's lovely.
