Amazon.com Review

When director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Family Man, Red Dragon) bought Hilhaven Lodge, the former home of Ingrid Bergman, his first purchase was an old-school black-and-white photo booth. Hilhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures captures--in candid, four-panel glory--the revolving door of A-listers who have passed through chez Ratner and stopped to strike a pose.

Things kick off with a meandering, though entertaining, introduction from the legendary Robert Evans (don't worry, he's in there--page 177). The photos are then alphabetized by first name--from Aaliyah to Zhang Ziyi--allowing for some surprising pairings: Don Cheadle and Don Rickles, Quentin Tarantino and Quincy Jones, and the sign-of-the-apocalypse match-up of Michael Jackson across the page from Mickey Rourke clutching a Chihuahua. When faced with the prospect of posing it seems that most subjects do one of the following: Stick Out Their Tongue (Estella Warren, Jackie Chan), Mug (Britney Spears, Danny DeVito), Vamp (Gina Gershon, Rebecca Gayheart); Kiss (Bridget Fonda and Danny Elfman, Edward Norton and Selma Hayek), or Flip the Bird (Lara Flynn Boyle, Philip Seymour Hoffman). Paris Hilton pops up (as expected) along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Chelsea Clinton. Christopher Penn looks like he's daring you to take the first swing, and, sporting a shaved head and thick goatee, Colin Farrell perfects the Escaped Con on a Bender look. And even without aid from their stylists or special lighting, there's no denying the natural glamour in some of these candid photos--Matthew McConaughey, Monica Bellucci, and Heidi Klum's snapshots sizzle.

You'll want to clear off a VIP spot on your coffee table for Hilhaven Lodge, one very cool and austere collection. --Brad Thomas Parsons

From Publishers Weekly

Film and music video director Ratner's (Rush Hour; The Family Man) collection of four-panel snapshots show many of show biz's brightest as they grin, leer or vamp it up for the black-and-white photo booth in his Hilhaven Lodge (the former home of Ingrid Bergman). Naomi Watts, Chelsea Clinton, Michael Jackson and dozens of others pose happily; Brooke Shields exposes a very pregnant belly, Brendan Fraser and Don Rickles make funny faces and Paul Walker hoists his middle finger. Britney Spears appears cutely disheveled in a pair of glasses and more clothing than she usually sports by far, while Rod Stewart looks like he's been carved out of oak. Famous folks seem pretty ordinary without all the makeup artists and airbrushing, which makes this a strangely compelling book to thumb through.

How often do we let go & be ourself??? I love the pictures! I think they are fun. With all the craziness we hear about in Hollywood, most people just want to relate to one another. I recommend that you do it-find a photo booth. I have my own personal snapshots on my desk. Brett is the man & the only other young man out there doing his thing that I admire as much is Brad Melter.

Check out Brett's own work......amazing!
I love B&W pictures.

...as in Wharhol. At least his book, like his work, was authentic. This is one of the very little ones that gets tossed back in the pond, or ends up on the close-out table.

Il gioco dell'autoritratto si combina con la lunga vicenda della cabina per fototessere (photobooth): felice connubio, miscelato con un poco di vanità (da star system), che offre un punto di vista che si aggiunge a una storia lunga.
