Editorial Reviews

The Boston Globe, November 16, 2005

"The duo is united in their love of ringing guitars and infectious melodies on this full-length collection of pop-rock gems."

Product Description

Here it is: the self-titled debut album from Hilken Mancini (guitarist/vocalist of Fuzzy) and Chris Colbourn (bassist/vocalist of Buffalo Tom). Along with their friends in the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., and Belly, Fuzzy and Buffalo Tom helped place Boston on the US indie rock map in the early '90s. Alternative rock fueled by Nevermind major label budgets. A Freak Scene indeed.

Over the years these two minor league stars collected plenty of stories, touring scars, and an impressive guitar collection. One afternoon at her kitchen table, Hilken showed Chris a couple of songs she had been sketching on guitar. Collaborating came naturally; the two began writing and recording an album together. They decided to share lead vocals in the style of their heroes Husker Du, Big Star and Richard & Linda Thompson. Chris played rhythm, Hilken added skylark harmonies and lead guitar, and they both wrote songs from a darker place than they had with their past bands.

Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn is an autumn-soaked gem with bright melodies written from both male and female perspectives. Essential contributions are made by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Winston Braman from Consonant and drummer Mike Savage from The Count Me Outs. It's rock, folk, indie pop, and more. You might file under: Anne Sexton has lunch with The Village Green Preservation Society.

Chris continues to record with his band Buffalo Tom, and Hilken, who has always embraced a DIY spirit, recently co-founded Punk Rock Aerobics, the international hit book and workout series (Da Capo Press).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, January 1, 2012

This review is from: Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn (Audio CD)
This is a great CD with an excellent variety of songs. I prefer the Chris Colburn songs a bit more, but to each his own. If you are or were a fan of Fuzzy of Buffalo Tom, grab this CD. Even if you haven't heard of those bands, it's a very refreshing CD that is well done. It's a little different in a good way: vocals are a little different, melodies are tight, variety of songs are great. J Mascis from Dinasaur Jr. does some guitar work on a few songs that is really nice.
I'd really like to see another CD.

A great indie rock album, by any standard. Great guitars (J. Mascis appears on two tracks). Colbourn and Mancini's voices sound great together. Very well produced--great, clean sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old Tin Roof, November 19, 2005
This review is from: Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn (Audio CD)
Do you miss either of the bands BUFFALO TOM or FUZZY? Then you will be insanely happy to hear this records. Hilken Mancini was the only good thing about the band Fuzzy (which probably about 19 people ever heard). It's nice to hear her sing again. It's also nice to hear the voice of Buffalo Tom, Chris Colbourn, singing again. The songs mostly sound like later Buffalo Tom ballads with boy-girl vocals. Unfortunately, there really aren't more than a couple really good songs. You will definately want to get this if you are a Buffalo Tom fan because it's probably the closest you will ever get to hearing some new material.
