From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-A readable, interesting, and well-balanced portrait. Guernsey accurately recounts her subject's childhood in a Chicago suburb to her most current accomplishments. She explores the major influences that shaped Mrs. Clinton's life, making her a confident, determined, and successful woman. The author repeatedly mentions the First Lady's feminist beliefs, but explains how she has learned to balance her attitudes with those of more traditional segments of the population. The clearly and concisely written text is illustrated with a variety of appropriately placed full-color and black-and-white photographs. Guernsey incorporates quotes throughout, but they are all undocumented and many seem to come from private conversations. This makes the book inappropriate for reports. Information on Mrs. Clinton can be located in current periodicals and newspapers, but the only book available for this age group is Victoria Sherrow's Hillary Rodham Clinton (Macmillan, 1993).

Gr. 4-7. Guernsey does an excellent job of explaining the subtitle of her book, going into detail about what makes Clinton tick and how she has changed the First Lady image. At the same time, the book clearly shows the downside of being on the cutting edge and cites various instances in which Clinton had to tone herself down (or, in some cases, perk herself up) to conform to people's expectations about candidates' wives. The issue of the President's extramarital affairs is mentioned but not dwelled upon, with Guernsey emphasizing how hard the Clintons have worked to put their marriage back together. The book ends with Clinton's first steps into health care reform. This is one of the first books about the First Lady and is a very good choice, though there will obviously be much more to write about her.
