Biography

It was the country music equivalent of a sonic boom – a sound so bold, so different and so powerful it sent shock waves throughout country radio and up the charts. That sound was “Brand New Man,” the chart-topping debut single that heralded the high-octane arrival of Brooks & Dunn in 1991. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn came out with musical guns blazing and in the years ... Read more in Amazon's Brooks & Dunn Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Hillbilly Deluxe is their 9th studio record, and could unarguably be called their best to date, running the gamut from the soulful 'Believe' to the rockin' title track 'Play Something Country'. Arista. 2005.

Amazon.com

"Boot Scootin' Boogie" zoomed Brooks & Dunn to the top of the country line-dance craze in 1992, and one could hardly blame them for riding the crest, even if it left them in a rut of shallow, preening dance ditties. They began showing greater depth in the late '90s, with albums like If You See Her and Steers and Stripes. While Hillbilly Deluxe is musically consistent, Tony Brown's production sharp and focused throughout, the themes here revert to the same old same old: empty, shallow stompers with lyrics that occasionally sound dated. "Play Something Country," another Ronnie Dunn collaboration with Terry McBride, duly name-drops current Nashville stars as well as P. Diddy and Patsy Cline. Things don't improve with the blustery "She Likes to Get Out of Town"; "Just Another Neon Night," with its painfully clichéd line "turn off that rap, boys, play me some Haggard"; or "Building Bridges," a "vocal event" with superfluous input from Vince Gill and Sheryl Crow. Only the moving story-song "Believe," brimming with heart and honesty, reminds of their potential when they think beyond the boot. --Rich Kienzle

I feel bad these artist get unfairly tagged by Sony's lack of transparency and poor reputation.

My opinion is that Hillbilly Deluxe is Brooks & Dunn's best recording so far.

Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn are two super-talented guys. They're also the reigning Duo of the Year for roughly a decade (they deserve it, though). HILLBILLY DELUXE is not their best album of all time (personally, I think that would have to be STEERS & STRIPES or RED DIRT ROAD, though each to his own). However, these guys never miss the mark, and this album is guaranteed to please!

Dunn gives some of his best vocal performances yet, such as the growled spoken-verses on "Whisky Do My Talkin" and the heartfelt spoken-verses of "Believe," and yet belts his heart out on "I May Never Get Over You." Brooks rocks out on "She Likes To Get Out Of Town" (a cliched song, yeah, but just try not to enjoy it), and "One More Roll Of the Dice." "Play Something Country" is a catchy hit that you can't help but listening too, no matter how many times you've already heard it (and it's been played a LOT). "Just Another Neon Night" and the title track are tributes to small-town rednecks who have nothin' better to do but go honky-tonkin'. The album ends with a powerful performance of Radney Foster's "Again."

Two superb singer/songwriters, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn have, for more years than one dares count, entertained and delighted fans. HILLBILLY DELUXE continues their tradition of blending honky-tonk, classic country, and rock into a modern sound that has managed to garner them hits, long after many of their peers have dropped off the radio. If nothing else, HILLYBILLY DELUXE serves as an important reminder, for those of you who may not have caught the drift: Brooks & Dunn ain't finished yet, not by a long shot.

I am not an avid Brooks and Dunn Fan. I liked their new single "Play Something Country." I decided to give their new CD a try.

I was very surprised. Each and every song is a winner on this album. I'd have to say that my favorite songs on this album are "Play Something Country", "Whisky Do My Talkin", and "She's About As Lonely As I'm Going To Let Her Get."

Their upbeat songs are honky tonkin, foot tapin, pleasure. The balands are heart wrenching and beautiful. This is deffinately a CD that will go in heavy rotation in my jukebox.

If you do not have this album, add it to your collection. It's country music at it's best!

Every emotional element is touched on this CD and a great mix of styles. Heartfelt ballads to foot-stomping good timing songs. Kix has never sounded so good with songs that really match his vocals and Dunn really showcases his stellar vocals leaving no doubt that he has one of the best vocals in country music today. The production is very lean so you really get to hear Dunn at his finest.

Just my opinion that "Hillbilly Deluxe" is by far Kix & Ronnie's primo effort so far! You know, when "Steers & Stripes" came out I thought "WOW, this is their best" and it was then. Then "Red Dirt Road" and I thought the same thing. "Hillbilly Deluxe" far surpasses both of the other efforts in originality and pure country music (this coming from someone living on the outskirts of NYC). I would also like to add that if the guys decide to perform "Whiskey Do My Talkin'" in concert, they should heed this warning: women will be dropping like flies :-) this song just reeks of sexuality!

Another great album from country's best duo. I've come to expect a lot from these guys and so far they have delivered every time. I can't listen to them without wanting to hit the dance floor and dance all night long. The gospel tinged "Believe" is my favorite song on this album. It moves me the way a good song should.

I believe this CD is Brooks & Dunn's best yet. It's a bit rougher than most of their material, but the tracks flow together exceptionally well. They describe it as a return to their roots, and it is -- kind of. They've adopted a sound that is fairly different than anything else they've done, but the themes of the songs are certainly more traditional.

Most of the more rockin' songs go to Ronnie Dunn: Play Something Country, Whiskey Do My Talkin', Hillbilly Deluxe, and Just Another Neon Night, among others.

Kix Brooks took lead on some great slower songs, including My Heart's Not a Hotel, One More Roll of the Dice, and Her West Was Wilder.

My favorites from each are 'Hillbilly Deluxe' and 'Believe' from Dunn, and 'Her West Was Wilder' from Brooks. Both are top-notch entertainers, sounding as good here as they ever have!

Hillbilly Deluxe is a special CD to me. I love all their music, but the song, "I Believe" is my all time favorite. It is a beautifully written song, and extremely inspiring. This CD is right up there with the best of them.

1st, want to correct "Alex in Los Angeles" regarding the CD installing Sony Rootkit Virus -- he has the WRONG duo. B&D are through Arista, the other duo is through Sony. I've heard all of those CDs unfortunately impacted have been recalled and replaced so hopefully that problem has been resolved for everyone!

To the review, what a fantastic job they did with this CD and their performance of BELIEVE at the CMAs. These guys are truly gifted artists! Whether live or on the CD, BELIEVE has to be one of the most powerful message songs and vocal powerhouses to come down in a long time; everyone should take a good listen to that chilling/emotive song. All of the other songs give you a great mix leading to why they called this CD HD and prove they are still at the top of their game.
