This book brought back many memories of the stories my grandmother would often tell us children as we sat on the front porch eating watermelon. There were many of the medicinal rememdies that I was given and taught to use by several of my elders. The old ways are good ways and this book can be a source of remembering. It can also teach our next generation the importance of knowing the old ways. Americans have little heritage that we pass on,but I think this book has the potential of keeping our heritage alive. It should be a mandatory read for all college students not just English Literature students. I found it delightful, funny, sad, and caring. The author knows what she is writing about and it shows.

I hate to badmouth the book because it seemed to be a labor of love to put it together, but I really didn't see anything unique about it. Many of the proverbs are common to other parts of the country. The short story was sweet, but very simplistic and amateurish in styling. The stories about moonshiners aren't that unique to Appalachia. Moonshiners were (are) all over the south (and west). Having taught in mid-Appalachia many years ago, I just didn't think it really accurately describes the people or customs there.

This book was a great way to to unwind and look at the oral folklore that has been handed down from previous generations. I love the innocence about this book and the traditions and customs, which are reflected in the stories with the Appalachian people. It is authentic and I would reccommend this book for any age level.
