Ideal Balance Dog Food
100% Precisely Balanced Nutrition

Hill's Science Diet dog food provides key nutrients that are in amounts within an optimal range for your dog, and is precisely balanced for their nutritional needs. We develop products with the precise balance of 50 nutrients based on life stage, lifestyle, size or special care needs. We carefully avoid too little or too much of certain nutrients.

America’s Pet Nutrition Experts Since 1939

Balanced pet nutrition has been our passion for more than 70 years. Over 150 veterinarians and pet nutritionists are involved in the development of our products. We make every bag of our dry pet food with the highest quality natural ingredients. These ingredients must meet our strict requirements for purity and nutrient content, which exceed industry standards.

High-Quality Ingredients for a Happy, Healthy Life

The right nutrition can help a cat's health, energy level and quality of life. Hill's Science Diet cat food contains nutrient-rich, high-quality ingredients like chicken, whole grains, and multivitamins to create nutritionally balanced food. Every bag of Science Diet provides key nutrients in amounts within an optimal range for your cat.

Your Breed's Special Needs

Most dog breeds are considered mature by the time they are 7 years old. If you have a larger breed, you may need to change the way you care for him by the time he's age 5. Giant breeds reach the mature adult stage at age 4. Hill’s Ideal Balance Large Breed dog food is perfectly balanced for large breed dogs. For medium sized dogs, consider Hill’s Ideal Balance Adult dog food that is available in a variety of flavors; for small or toy sized dogs, consider Hill’s Ideal Balance Small & Toy Breed dog food that comes in a variety of flavors, both dry and canned.

Transition Tips

Begin the transition by mixing the current food with the new pet food. Gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. Continue to do this over a 7-day period. Transitioning slowly can result in fewer digestive issues and better acceptance of the new pet food. For finicky, older, or pets with health conditions, the transition time could take 10 days or slightly longer.

I love my dogs and it's more important for them to be healthy, but dealing with the gravy mess is a pain in the butt!

I will continue to purchase this dog food as I do like the idea of vegetables with the meat.

My dog usually loves a canned food like this, that is meaty, has gravy and "bits" as opposed to the solid type that you just mush up.

My first thought when I dumped this into a bowl, was that the "meat" looks weird. They are like flat square of meat that look really artificial. Other than that, it looked like a good stew - a lot of gravy, veggies and rice.

So I called my Tysie over to eat it and he licked up all the gravy and veggies/rice, but left behind ALL of the meat. This is extremely unusual for him! He of course loves meat. I usually cook him his own serving when I make supper and he has never left any behind, no matter what type of meat it is. Even with canned foods, he never leaves the meat behind. The only thing he doesn't like too much is the kind that is just the solid mold of food that you have to mush up. For him to leave all of the meat behind, is just ... weird.

I tried a second can the next day and he did the same thing - left behind all of the meat. Based on this, I obviously will not buy or consider this food in the future. I'll stick with Merrick canned food for him, since he actually eats it.

Glad for the opportunity to try this brand and variety.
We give our elderly dog crushed medicine twice a day in wet food, so the gravy factor was positive for us.
Like the other reviewer, I found the gravy less than appealing when I portioned out half a can for our dog's meal, but our dog thought it was great.
There are plenty of veggies in the mix along with rice.
Our dog seemed to really enjoy the meal and left nothing in her dish.
Within a short time, I noticed she was passing smelly gas, just as the other reviewer mentioned.

I'm not sure why some food seems to cause this and some doesn't. Since the trial was generous and included 12 cans instead of the single can I expected, I will see if the gas factor is temporary or a permanent result of eating this food.

Normally, my dog eats the chicken and barley variety of Nature's Recipe dry dog food. Every once in awhile- maybe once or twice a month- I like to treat her with "Special Dinner," in which I give her a little less dry food and instead, I mix in 1/3 or 1/2 a can of wet food. She LOVES it of course! So again, canned dog food is not a staple for her, but rather, it's a special treat because she's an amazing dog!

I usually buy Nature's Recipe or Canidae canned food, but I decided to give Hill's a try. It has a nice and easy pop-tab to open the can, and there was a good amount of meat in comparison to the rice, vegetables, and gravy. Another reviewer said there was too much gravy, and maybe that's true if canned food is all that your dog eats, but as a mix-in with dry food, it was a perfect ratio. My dog thought the concoction was tasty and gobbled it all up, licking her bowl clean.

When I was transferring the rest of the can (I only use half at a time) into a container for the refrigerator, I took a closer look at the label and I was NOT impressed. I probably should have done that first. On the side, it says that the product is "made in the USA," which is what I look for in dog products- too much illness caused by imported stuff. I felt good about the dog food until I kept reading the label; apparently, the dog food has "imported ingredients." It does not tell you where the ingredients are imported from, and that makes me very suspicious. My dog did not have the gas problems that other reviewers mentioned, so it didn't cause any issues for her on the digestive front at least (she's a lab/corgi mix, if that matters).

I really wouldn't recommend this dog food.

I subscribe to Whole Dog Journal, which carefully tests and rates commercial dog food. Hills Ideal Balance was recently added to their approved list. My dog loves all of the flavors, but the most important factors are safety and nutrition. I rely on my veterinarian and Whole Dog Journal to assess these qualities. Ideal Balance is approved by both. My only complaint is that Hills has removed the whole wheat from their foods, probably in response to the current grain-free trend in the consumer habits of people. However, a recently published research study on the canine genome revealed that dogs now possess grain-processing genes that their wolf ancestors do not possess. Wheat germ is a fabulous source of magnesium, a mineral that my breed is chronically deficient in. I add a tablespoon of wheat germ to Ideal Balance, and after six months my dog has great blood work and a lovely coat. Yes, it looks and smells yummy, and is quickly snarfed down, but the important factor is the nutrition in each can.

My dogs are fussy. Hills Ideal balance chunky canned food (all flavors) has been enthusiastically lapped up by all three of my dogs. They also love the kibble and I frequently mix some of the wet with the kibble. I do chop the meat pieces in half with a spoon to make it easier for my small dogs to eat. I was sad to learn from my local store that they will be discontinuing this chunky stew formulation in favor of the "loaf" style grain-free, which all three of my dogs hate. I will buy as much as I can here and will sadly be looking for another food when the stocks of this food are gone.
