5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Him (Hardcover)
Him is a brilliant "absurd" play in three acts. Although I have never seen it produced, reading this play is thoroughly entertaining. (In fact, I'm not entirely sure it wasn't written to be performed inside the reader's mind.) The dialogue is so fresh, quirky and original that it's impossible to imagine an audience in 1928 would have been prepared for this sheer display of brilliance. e.e. cummings was also playing with the "fourth wall" during the play. The set "turns" so that the audience sees the room from all perspectives. Although Him and Me share some clever and fascinating banter, it's the three Weirds that steal the show for me. Like a Greek chorus or Shakespeare's witches, these three hysterical old ladies sit around and talk about things, such as their hippos. "We call ours Toasted."

If you enjoyed Waiting for Godot (Eng rev): A Tragicomedy in Two Acts (Beckett, Samuel) you will want to read this play.
