Best book about Durrell, December 16, 2009
This review is from: Himself & Other Animals Hb (Hardcover)
That's really himself - David Hughes portrait brings Gerald Durrell back to life. D.Hughes spent enough time in Bournemouth as a child - at the same time as Durrell. He was an editor for Durrell's publisher, Rupert Hart-Davis, he was a friend of Gerald for over 40 years, his neighbour in the south of France...
It's not a scholastic and boring biography, but that's a true portrait of the great man - as we had a privilege to knew him: a true crusader for the salvation of vanishing species, the founder of Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust, a true connoisseur of good wine (but who paid his respect to Teacher's as well) and cuisine (a real one, full of cholesterine. And his language was meaty and juicy too. Well written book, full of humour, excellent reading. A must for every Durrell's fan - without him we feel like orphans, and the book brings him back. At least for few hours or days
