My favorite album since Arcade Fire's Funeral,
By jcphoenix (Ottawa, ON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hind Hind Legs (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album really blew me away. I was expecting something good at least, considering the names dropped at filtermagazine (produced by two members of Broken Social Scene/Stars/The Dears/Metric, the second band signed to Equator which released the Islands album) but I really didn't expect this. The entire album from beginning to end is fantastic, though the first half is more immediate and stronger overall with all of the first five tracks being fantastic - though Frantic stands out particularly - I'd say it's like a mix of Mates of State and Fiery Furnaces but slightly edgier. Either way, it got stuck in my head the first time I heard it and still won't go away... The second half of the album is great as well but took me a couple more listens to get into with The Only Appalachian Cornfield and Rod Stewart being the standouts for me. My favorite album since Arcade Fire's Funeral came out and yet another great Canadian indie band...I am definitely picking this up the day it comes out officially. Favorite tracks: In the Valley, Frantic, Photo Corners, The Only Appalachian Cornfield, Rod Stewart

Bought it not knowing anything about the band...,

This review is from: Hind Hind Legs (Dig) (Audio CD)
A local record store was going out of business and I managed to pick this up for I think 2 dollars. I bought it based primarily on the artwork, and for 2 bucks I was willing to take a risk. I was actually very surprised on how much I would enjoy this. I've been listening to it very consistently for the last couple of weeks. They don't take themselves too seriously, in fact sometimes they remind me of a ska band. They're a culmination of folk music, indie rock, 70's rock with some ska sensibilities. For the most part they're upbeat and keep it light hearted. They're not entirely unique or original, but yet I can't really pin point bands I would compare them to. They have a lot of mainstream rock qualities as mentioned before(The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand) but I wouldn't throw them into that mix. It's a good listen, nothing extremely impressive but something keeps me coming back for more.

The hind hind legs of the Unicorns.,
This review is from: Hind Hind Legs (Dig) (Audio CD)
Being a Unicorns fan I came across this band during my Amazon adventures. (Amazon has become a very useful tool)I was instantly drawn towards the first track. It opens with a twangy guitar beat and a cheeky whiny voice, reminiscent of the unicorns. I was ashamedly pleased. Quite frankly I wouldnt mind a band that sounds identical to the disbanded unicorns. But seconds later differences are revealed, as the song breaks stride into a heavy guitar solo. A multi-melodic epic song is unleashed. Weaving and turning, changing pace, shimmies... culminating in a highly charged rocker. Quite fantastic. "In the Valley" continues the thumping sound, with a more "Franz Ferdinand" dance beat. However, the monotonous production style of the former is left in its dust, as the song transcends into expansive instrumental. Again, the feathers add dimension to a song by dropping everything and regrouping for the next verse. These guys go everywhere! The melodic changes are extremely engaging. "I really like you" is oozing the charisma of the unicorns again, but at this point one overwhelming problem becomes apparent. The lyrical juice is bitter if not bland. Its either absurd or below par. It really takes away from the experience, specially on the vocal attentive tracks, including "midly decorated", "oh you shocked me". The one liners are so unintriguing that it hurts any cult appeal. All the more inflicting because this band has the ingredients to really pool a growing fan base. The energy that flows through this band has a life of its own and its really enjoyable being suspended in it. Hopefully they can work on the lyrics. The next album should be a screamer!

escapist, free!!!,

I was referred to this album by muzzle of bees. they had the mp3 of "in the valley", which hooked me quickly. I was excited when I received the album, but I wasnt expecting too much. well, too bad... when I put my headphones on and pressed play, I found myself ,quite quickly, being transported into a strange, wierd, intense, escapist, energetic, painful, yet pleasant land......not many albums totally grab and launch me to a whole new ennvironment, this one did quickly.i look for music that makes me feel (most doesnt unfortunately) after repeated listens, I can confidently say that this album moves me in a very particular way that is unlike most of the stuff ive heard this year. I feel wierd, yet vibrant in a peculiar sense...im engaged, yet off by a step...well it makes me feel something unique, and I f___n love it in my opinion, the lovely feathers somehow crafted one of the most original, and wierdly exciting album of 2006 so far. Their style is eclectic, definately influenced by talking heads, television, weezer and unicorns---they pound quick post-punk numbers, and other more gentle tunes, which usually somehow climax. Their lyrics are quite limbic, though sometimes linear, and other times not-linear at all. still the words somehow create a cohesive tapestry, where, I the listener can still some how interact and re-appropriate the fabric. obvioulsy due to the limbic, sometimes vague nature of the feathers lyrics, we will all undoubtedly have our own interpretations, but for me,generally speaking, the words seem to be about the natural fragility of human power relationships within society, and the neccessary but tragic ego that we seem to bring into them...i mean its expressed in a wierd way, but thats my feeling...(if this is too far off for anyone I apologize; i do love participating with albums, specifically crafting my own theories and intuitions frfrom them...good albums intice me to do so.) the cd is an escapist album, where when sick and tired of my humdrum life, i can put the album on and reliably bet that I will be going somewhere fantastical yet relatable. they have created their own special world, and yes its wierd, but it remains infectuously inviting.

I own all three of the Lovely Feathers albums and this is without a doubt my favorite. I just think it perfectly captures the energy of a band that is having fun crafting artsy-type rock songs that they enjoy playing. There are 13 tracks on this CD, and not a single of them is filler. From the jittery, dance induced beat of "In the Valley," the nonsensical lyrics of "I Really Like You," (The opening verse is about a girl who wears polka dot pattern pajamas beneath her regular clothes. There is also the infamous chorus "I really, really, really, really, really, like you.") the faux vibraphone and ska guitar driven "Frantic," schizophrenic rocker "Mildly Decorated," the hopeful and joyous accordion(?) driven "Photocorners," the beautiful, melancholy "E Man Sorrow" (My favorite song. Like "Frantic," this one also features vibraphones.) which ends with the band totally rocking out and the lead singer chanting "I don't want to die with you my baby," the bouncy, sing-along, and severe self-esteem booster track "Rod Stewart," "Lion Eats the Wildebeest," which is one of the most lyrically abstract songs I have ever heard. (The song also has an interesting glam-rock type ending, which abruptly stops just when you think the band is going to go even further with it.) If you listen long enough after "Wildebeest," you'll be treated to what is probably one of the most atrocious birthday songs ever recorded. It's funny. Several of the songs here (I Really Like You, Wrong Choice, Photocorners, The Only Appalachian Cornfield, Lion Eats the Wildebeest) can also be found on the Feathers debut CD "My Best Friend Daniel." While that's a good album in it's own right, the versions of the aforementioned songs there are no where near as fast or energetic as the versions found here, and I think it's these faster versions that stand out better from the originals. After listening to this-my first foray into the Feathers-I was surprised to find that they aren't any more popular than they are. They're certainly one of the more talented, adventurous, and interesting bands to come along in awhile. I guess what I'm trying to get at is give this album a try.

It isn't some whiney independent band that is grossly sarcastic and showing off how much smarter they are than us."Pope John Paul," seems to be about Pope John Paul the sarcasm is there but it isn't pretentious. "I Really Like You," is a fun song sketchy and loud at times and soft at other times but it is clearly NOT a Pixies song. "Frantic," has vocals that remind me of an old punk song I just can't place it, maybe a Mission of Burma song, regardless it is also a good song. "Wrong Choice," sounds like a Dig song. My wife doesn't love this CD but I bought it for me not her. So, guys being that penis is mentioned and the songs are sketchy your girlfriends and wive may not dig this CD but what the hell do they know, right? Tell 'em to go back to their Lady Ga-Ga and to get outta your car. If you don't have a car get one, then you'll get a girl, then you can kick her out of your car.

Honestly, if you are sitting here contemplating buying this cd, just do it. If you like the Unicorns, Olivia Tremor Control or basically anything E6, Broken Social Scene, Tapes n' Tapes, the Magnetic Fields, even Modest Mouse, then you should listen to this. Even if you don't like any of the above bands, I would still force you to listen to this. So good, one of the most mind-blowing things I've bought since Boys and Girls in America. Yeah, I know, HUGE, but I'm pretty pumped about this cd. You will be too.

Hind Legs is a collection of delicious songs from The Lovely Feathers.Dreamy rock, upbeat rock, crazy rock... how can you describe it? unique songs and lyrics. Ranging from exciting chaotic tunes like "Frantic" to eerily reminiscent songs like "Wrong Choice" you cannot go wrong with this buy. Check it out; you won't be disappointed.

I haven't felt this way about a band in years. Not the most consistent album, certainly, but I can tell already that it will be my album of the year. Funny and absurd yet somehow moving and heartbreaking. This album has made my summer marvelous. I adore them, truly.

I typically don't warm up to many CDs the first time I listen to them. The Lovely Feathers, however, caught my ear the first time. There are many different noticeable influences in their music, from The Strokes to Radiohead, in some of their slower songs. I was impressed, however, that they manage to show their influences without sounding like a cheap immitation of any of these bands. I also like the fact that they often switch the pace of their songs, making them really interesting to listen to.Certainly The Lovely Feathers are not the most spectacular band I've ever heard, but they are by far the most interesting and entertaining band I've discovered this year. The extreme and exaggerrative wailing-style the frontman uses may not be for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoy it. I found this band put out a fairly perfect debut album. My favorite tracks on this CD are "I Really Like You" and "Wrong Choice." |
