I had been straining to listen to Hindemith's earliest recording of his "Mathis der Maler" symphony on two previous CDs (on Teldec and Koch) through sheets of noise. This Dutton release is a revelation, the noise floor having been reduced to little consequence. I am normally not too fussy about surface noise in vintage recordings transferred to CD, but this particular recording, on the Teldec and Koch discs, was awash in noise to the point of distraction. Not so here.
With the unpleasant swishing noises removed, Hindemith's first recorded version of his "Mathis" symphony can more clearly reveal a personal interpretation and competent conducting technique--and pragmatism regarding the realities of recording in the 1930s. The three movements of this piece normally total at least 27 minutes in performance; this reading clocks in at less than 24. This seems an obvious effort to fit the piece neatly onto three 78-RPM records, each side of a disc accommodating a bit less than four minutes in those days. Hence, the first movement is accomplished in less than eight minutes, the second in under four, the third under twelve minutes. For all of that, there is little sense of hurrying, just a tight, crisp performance, the Berlin Philharmonic playing quite well.
Dutton's engineers have seen to preserving (or enhancing) the body in the lower strings, which resonate nicely; brass choirs (notably at the ends of the first and third movements) also sound surprisingly like the result of current recording techniques. Otherwise, this one sounds its age, midrange frequencies having a somewhat tubby sound. Certain percussion details, such as delicate triangle strokes, or cymbal attacks in heavily-scored passages, cannot be heard.
