Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This DVD includes astounding vintage footage of the Hindenburg, both before, during and after its tragic explosion! There are some especially rare shots of the ship mid-air above New York City. Of course, the explosion footage is amazing and tragic. This is a very important piece of video documentation. Don't miss it! Running time is 18 minutes. Table of Contents: Hindenburg Explodes (1937)/ This riveting six minute short shows the explosion of the worlds largest airship, The Hindenburg (LZ-129) Zepplin Blimp, as it hovered over a huge crowd at Lakehurst Naval Air Base. One of the most significant events of 1937, the Hindenburg disaster shocked the world and remains an important part of aviation history. This short also includes scenes of the Hindenburg flying over New York. / Pathe News Digest (1937) / Pathe News Digest produced general interest newsreels and this 1937 reel covers all the major events in the year. Much of the coverage is about World War 2, including Stalin reviewing his fleet and air force. Also included is a CIO strike in which workers break factory windows, 1930s sports footage of the Washington vs. Chicago football game, the coronation of King George VI, movies about Wallis Simpson and the Prince of Wales (a great bit of 1930s culture), Amelia Earharts' last flight preparations before disappearing, and Hindenburg video of the amazing and tragic explosion and crash. There is also other footage of interest, including that of the Ohio flooding disaster, emphasized by water-filled houses and destroyed buildings, and tragic scenes of Madrid's war carnage marked bombed buildings, barricades on city streets, and the removal of bodies from the rubble. 30s culture, everything from fashion to politics, are well covered in this fascinating time warp of a newsreel. No audio, even though the actual reportage of the incident included one of the most famous extemporaneous radio commentaries of all time.
