This book is an amazing reference for those wanting to pick up normal, every day words and phrases in urdu/hindi. It is organized in a wonderful manner -- first showing you the basic grammatical rules, followed by basic phrases, giving an English/Urdu-Hindi and Hindi/English dictionary, and finally giving you a section full of menus, road signs, and other necessary words. Perhaps my favorite aspect of this phrase book is that in the dictionary section, it gives you sample conversations, which allow you to see how the sentances are structured and allows you to learn helpful phrases. In addition to the content, the size of this book is perfect for fitting into a purse, handbag, etc. In virtually all respects I would say that this is an amazing little reference book!

Very handy in India,

The book is very handy to carry around. The translations are colloquial and useful as opposed to Indian books that give every definition no matter how obsure. There is a problem with using boldface to indicate nasals, but the boldface is very hard to notice. Also noun gender isn't indicated. It is the book I carry in my pocket in India.

This book is very handy for those who want to learn the basic structure of and handy phrases in Hindi or Urdu. Good for travelers, both in content and in size--it is small and easy to carry around. As an Indian and native Hindi speaker, I found this to be a good introduction to the language for those seeking only that much.
