It seems the vast majority of Alternate Histories are written by Americans or Europeans, so its no surprise when the majority of departure points are based on North American or European History. Hindustaan is a fine example of a departure from this trend. The world created in this novel is complex, vivid and exiting and in some ways reminded me of Stirling's The Peshawar Lancers.
The story itself is an entertaining adventure that has many unexpected turns in it and leads to a very satisfying conclusion. The story itself has an economy of sub-plots that makes for a faster; however, more historical and character back stories could have made this a far richer novel. I enjoyed reading it but I want more.
This is my first book written by Mainak Dhar but I've already purchased my second based solely on this one.
