Beautiful, March 18, 2002

I bought this CD after having heard Padma Talwalkar (sometimes spelt Talwarkar, not sure if that's accepted or not) on the radio and owning one of her recordings on tape. She is an incredible singer in all senses of the word. Her voice is an instrument of great natural beauty and she has obviously had incredible training, because she sings this amazingly complicated music with true facility. You will hear her wonderful legato, perfect intonation, and passionate performance of arpeggios (the word seems inadequate in the realm of this music's microtones and complex rhythms) which are so thrilling and bizarre (to a Western ear) that it's hard to believe they were ever written at all, least of all sung so accurately. This is truly a disc that will amaze: both in terms of the beauty of the music, and as well the skill of its performance.
I don't know very much at all about the musicology and history of Ragas, but I still find this wonderful to listen to.
