5.0 out of 5 stars Add this CD to your collection!
It took a friend in Chapel Hill, NC to hear about this group. Once I got the CD, it quickly entered into my favorites. Very jazz influenced but down home hip-hop. If they had the marketing power of a huge label, would be the next Arrested Development or higher.

Very innovative, wide variety of style. Intelligent rap (esp. Invisible Man and Cain at the Crossroads....)...

3.0 out of 5 stars the groove that slides the millenium
the great thing about sankofa is that the beats and grooves are so laid back, but the mc's words color it so vividly that you can't help but nod yo' head. the only drawback is the production, which does no justice to the band's live show.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Look Into the Briar Patch, January 14, 2001

If you are tired of hip hop artists sampling all their grooves and not creating any of their own music, you should definitely check out this band. Complimented with a deadly bass and drummer combination this album presents some grooves that carry the hip hop genre with a touch of jazz. The bass player alternates between both electric and upright always playing in a tight sync with the drummer, even during live performances. Keyboard work, although simple, is done in good taste. The MC's more profound lyrics are also not as foul and violent as many conventional hip hop & rap bands. Check out San Kofa's second album, "The Five Elements," if you enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great CD!, September 18, 1999

I usually don't listen to rap or hip hop, but my friend told me about these guys and I liked it immediately. My insatiable music tastes are usually mollified by the likes of Duke Ellington and Bach; Sankofa has given me a new vibe for me to hear. The CD mixes intelligent lyrics with jazz-like fervor and is much better than any other hip-hop CD. You should buy this CD immediately!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice, August 19, 1999

Buy this CD so you can say you knew them when. Once they sign, they are going to throw another curveball into the traditional hip hop scene with their incredible sound.

If you have the opportunity to see them live, you must take it. I sincerely hope they will add some live cuts in their upcoming CD 5 elements.

Nice, very nice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hip-hop with a live jazz fusion, August 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hip Hop From the Briar Patch (Audio CD)
The flavor that Sankofa brings is something that has been missing in hip-hop as of late..with the exception of The Roots and a handful of other acts. The live sound and the smooth and sometimes hard rymthes of MC Cream (Greenlee) almost forces you to feel the music instead of just hearing it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sankofa is off the hook, June 14, 1999

To witness Sankofa live is an experience for the mind. Straight out groovy jazz, soul, and funk rhythms laced by the crisp flowing rhymes of Cream MC. If you ever get a chance to see 'em perform, go and check it, if not, then grab this cd and get ready to kick it and check the technique. You'll be glad there are bands like this coming up with live instrumentation and hip-hop.

If you love experiencing Digable Planets and The Roots, you'll definitely be down with Sankofa. One of the best independent hip-hop bands out there in my humble opinion.
