Editorial Reviews

Produced by Queen Latifah and Bruce Willis, The Hip Hop Project is a response to those who describe hip-hop as negative. (Some is, some isn't.) Art Start founder Scott Rosenberg and his partner, Matt Ruskin, spent four years documenting the work of this New York-based program, and the result is a film bursting with positivity. The focus of their attention is rapper/social worker Chris "Kazi" Rolle, who helps a group of at-risk African American teenagers to produce a record. He's assisted by his fiancée, Robin "Kheperah" Kearse, a music industry veteran. From the start, they discourage misogyny and thug posturing, but encourage their charges to rhyme from the heart. Released in conjunction with the movie, the Hip Hop Project CD took years to materialize, because the aspiring rappers were expected to keep up with school work and sometimes had to take time out to deal with family crises. The charismatic Christopher "Cannon" Mapp, for instance, gets involved while his mother is entering the final stages of multiple sclerosis. Kazi, who is in his 20s, has issues of his own. In encouraging these kids to strengthen family bonds, he realizes he needs to set a better example. So, the filmmakers follow Kazi as he returns to the Bahamas to pay his respects to his foster mother. Then, he re-connects with his birth mother, who left him behind when she moved to the States. All the while, he teaches his charges to write, rap, and record an album. Willis and rap mogul Russell Simmons help out along the way. Viewers concerned about language should be advised that there's profanity here, but no negativity. Even Oprah, an outspoken critic of gangsta rap, would approve. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is Hip-Hop!, January 5, 2010
This review is from: The Hip Hop Project (DVD)
Man what can I say... This film gives great insight into the life and decisions that our inner city youth must face. I know plenty of people who went down the wrong road only because there was no other road to go on. I strongly encourage everyone to purchase this DVD because you will gain a new understanding of today's youth and you will be doing your part in helping them out b/c %100 of the films profits are being donated to organizations working with youth!

Finally!! I've been waiting for this DVD to come out! I saw this film at the Tribeca Film Fest in 06 (I think it won an award). This film had the audience in complete awe. This is a very touching story and whether you are a fan of Hip Hop or not you will thoroughly enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dope Story! Pure Hip Hop, January 5, 2010
By
This review is from: The Hip Hop Project (DVD)
I'm still amazed at the power music has on people. The subjects in this documentary overcame some of life's harshest obstacles with their passion to create music! This is what Hip Hop is about, not shiny rims, big chains, makin it rain, etc. I was hoping for a hot 16 from Bruce Willis!
